quick help needed
I'm working on replacing the timing cover on my truck and have run into a problem. The bolt that holds on the lower pully and the balancer wont come off. We have tried to take it off with the truck in every gear but it still wont come off. Any ideas on how to get it off? All it does is turn the engine no matter what gear.

can you wedge a pry bar through one of the holes n the balancer and against the block to keep the engine from turning? That should work. BTW, if it is turning that easy, you may have other problems. Do you have the plugs out? If so, put them back in.

You're supposed to loosen that before you take all the belts off. Try this, put the pulley back on the balancer and hold it with a pipe wrench. That's what I did when I was in your predicament.

the plugs are in. What if we were to put a rope through one of the holes and hold the balancer?

Best way is with an impact wrench. But if you don't have access to one, stick a jack handle or similar through the balancer to stop it from turning. You can also so the same at the flexplate, but I'm guessing you are not under the truck.

I've never done this but I heard it works. Put a socket on it with a long handle & wedge the handle against something immovable (frame, etc.). Remove the coil wire & bump the starter just a little bit.
