A Friendly Gift Opens Lots of Options

So lately (the last like 6yrs) my luck has just been pretty much ZILTCH but how I was raised I just press on anyway. Im that guy that helps everybody out and usually gets

Well, I guess being that guy is finally paying off...

So Ive been helping some family friends move, asking for nothing in return since Im really the kind that doesnt expect anything. They have an old 4x4 GMC thats been sitting out by the barn for years and Ive always joked with em about selling it. I always get told "NOPE, over my dead body will that truck ever get sold (jokingly)"

I just got informed tonight at supper that they decided that for my services and hard work, they are GIVING it to me

I begged them that that really wasnt necasarry, I have no problem helping them for no charge. But they insisted that its now mine.

So now Im soon to be the proud owner of a: ALL ORIGINAL, and UN-MOLESTED 68 GMC K20 with THE factory 327, A/C, and the whole 9 (the whole truck was a special order from my understanding)

So now begs the question... What do i do now?

Re: A Friendly Gift Opens Lots of Options

AND TO TOP IT OFF...

keep in mind, i was having ABSOLUTE HELL where i was living in colorado, (which btw... NEVER move to another state chasing a woman... LESSON LEARNED!!!) finally had the chance to leave and move back home to Texas, blew my engine 60 miles out, parents covered a uhaul to their house in New Mexico, and had to leave the truck behind in Colorado and will go back for it when i get the extra money

my step dad had a tbi 350 thats been sittin in the back yard for a couple years... long story short, i thought i could use it to swap my v6, but after teardown the costs to put together a reliable engine keeps adding up more than i can afford right now (been unemployed since aug.)

got in touch with a guy here in town that bought my grandparents (and prior family) land, about an old 70's ford truck that was my great uncles and was left on the property... i got told, if i can get it off, COME GET IT

NOT ONLY that, but the same guy is liquidating 110years worth of accumulation on his fathers land, they have over 60 some odd vehicles, old farm equip, horse drawn buggies, etc... i found a couple 50's chevys that cought my eye and we are currently working on a deal that he's going to let me trade out some work in exchange for one of em...

i have my eye on a 58 apache, 2 47-53 pickups, and a 47-53 panel... but im leaning towards the apache

so if all goes my way, ill have my 92 k1500, a 68 gmc k20, a 58 apache, and a 70 somethin f100... PLUS my step dad has a 68 camper special that he said if i got running and driving he would give me his 00 dakota...

I THINK MY LUCK IS CHANGING!

Re: A Friendly Gift Opens Lots of Options

Sounds like things are working out.

Think that guy would be amicable to parting with one of those 47-53's?

Can't wait to see pics of your new projects.

Im almost certain he would... As said theyre sellin off 110 years worth of stuff on this land, out of the 60 some odd vehicles he wants to keep 5 (one of the 5 is an old 30's diamond t) the rest are being sold

They are working on getting a facebook page with pics of everything, i can get the info when its up and ready for any interested (provided that its ok doing so with the admins)

Thanks, as soon as i can get some shots i will get em up

trust me, im DYING to start working on it and see just where its at and whats what... but out of respect for my parents friends im going to wait on doing anything with it until they have finished moving out, and give me the official "ok" which will probly be 2weeks or so.

BUT... until then, i will start my plan making

overall, i cant decide to keep it original to keep the value, or do some minor changes for what i would ACTUALLY use the truck for, and that would be a nice tow rig... for now will be just get it running and driving so i have some wheels while my daily driver is getting a new engine

whats yall's thoughts?
keep it all original?
or do slight mods to make it more functional for my intended use?

Re: A Friendly Gift Opens Lots of Options

Get it running, and driving, then only change minor things to make it yours. Leave the body and drive train alone.

if i were to change it the way id use it, i wouldnt change much, but IMO it would hurt the overall value.

so far im thinkin: install roof cab lights, swap out the split 16.5 rims for 16" steelies, 265 or 285 a/t's, 5th wheel, new coat of factory paint, and swap the outside mirrors with some era correct towing mirrors

the only powertrain id think about doing is donate the 327 to my step dads 68 chevy which would make his numbers matching like he wants and swap in a 400 built for torque to pull the hills becuase in my opinion a 327 just aint the best choice for towing

Re: A Friendly Gift Opens Lots of Options

I think (could be wrong??) when a truck had the cab clearance lights the roof was specially made for the lights with raised mount areas, i'd research it a bit before i just drilled and mounted some lights. It will increase the risk of water getting in too.

Yes, they have raised flat spots for the light to sit on.

Re: A Friendly Gift Opens Lots of Options

The raised spots for cab lights didn't start until 1969, '68s just had the normal roof and the long lights with the chrome on the top
