HS auto class 64 brake conversion

Hey everyone, newbie here. I teach automotive at an central texas high school. We just picked up a 64 c10 longbed stepside w/ a 283 for a student project. We got a pretty good deal on it due to some wiring issues which the students already took care of. Next is the front disc brake conversion, this is where I need to double check to make sure I read all the previous disc brake conversion threads correctly.

We found a set of 85 spindles and calipers. Can we reuse our 64 lower and upper control arms if we swap to 85 balljoints? Also after calling our parts supplier, I was told all the 85's have a 5 lug rotor, so what rotor is best to be used?

We're on a budget, so we're hoping we can get away with keeping the original control arms. Thanks!

Good luck with your project. The linked thread has a lot of information. I have done two and used everything from the donor truck. You will have to use aftermarket rotors. That is the only drawback to the 6 lug. Also make sure the spindles are for 1 1/4 rotors.

Re: HS auto class 64 brake conversion

We were able to find a local machine shop to redrill our rear bolt pattern, it's going to be converted to 5 lug, any years in particular we can use drums from?

Re: HS auto class 64 brake conversion

I'm doing the same 5 lug swap in the rear on my 66. I'm using the Moser axles but for the drum, you want a 71 or 72 C10 5 lug drum. 70 and back was still 6 lug. I'm not exactly sure what changed on the 73 up rear drums but that's the info I've gathered.

Just to be on the safe side also, measure your rear brake shoe width. Some were wider than others.

I was just checking around and you might need the 6 lug axle hub turned down for the 5 lug drums too. Buy the drums before you have machine work done so they can turn them while redrilling the axles.
