Tilt wheel teardown

Ok, anyone have the procedure for tearing down a tilt column. I have the wheel off of course and I'm looking at the plastic turn signal mechanism (which is cracked). How do I get this thing apart from here and where do you get parts??

Does the plastic lighted piece just slip in there to light up the shift indicator?

It may be best to state your overall goal
I too would like some instruction on hoe to toatally tear down a tilt column and rebuild it.
It sounds to me like you may just need help replacing the plastic turn signal mechanism? If this is the case, I can help with that.
1) remove the 2 screws in the shift indicator housing, and remove the housing. and then the light bulb.
2) remove the signal arm.
3) remove the Hazard knob (screw in end)
4) There should be 3 screws that go through the plastic signal mechanism that need removed. Then yyou can pull out that whole plastic mess. Just remember if your goal is to replace the mechanism, you will have to remove the black plastic connector on the other end of the wires. I just cut mine.
If you want to rebuild the culumn, I'm no help.
I would like to learn that as well. Anyboby?

P.S. And by the way. Any of the parts vendors on this board can get you a new plastic mechanism for somewhere around $40
Just go to the parts board and ask who can sell you a new assy.

I took those three screws out but there must still be something holding it.... agghhhh. Glad I have a few of these for parts cause there may be a disaster soon.....lol

Does that light bulb make the indicator and pointer light up?

Dean,

If the cancel plate is all that you want to fix, there is an easy way to do it without taking the turn signal switch out. Remove the turn signal arm, remove the two spring steel retainers, (thin strips approx. 2" LONG). Unclip the two plastic clips,(I use a small screw driver )and then the cancel plate can be manuevered out.

The nice thing is the cancel plate for the tilt is the same as the cancel plate for the non tilt. The turn signal switches are different though.
