Original Master Cylinder?

Did a search but couldn't find the answer to my question. Bought a '66 Chevy 3/4 ton a couple of weeks ago, its beat but has fairly low mileage and lots of options. This one has a screw on cap for the master. Which type is original? bale or screw cap or both. Have seen pictures of low mileage trucks with both types, were they used in different applications? Picture of one in question attached.

Both types were used. I do not know what may have been a determining factor.

Re: Original Master Cylinder?

Great subject ! Ive been looking into this a little recently. Several of my OG trucks still have this master. Mainly 1966s. If you look at the bottom it has a factory casting number and if I remember correctly a Delco cast ID logo, I will double check that. Just sent one out to be stainless steal sleeved, came back like new.

Re: Original Master Cylinder?

The truck was built the last week of December 1965 in Fremont. Weird optioned truck (327, turbo 400, no-spin, P/S and Brakes, all custom, tinted laminated windows, tach, 21 gal tank, but No Air). 60-66, Who rebuilt your master cylinder? I will probably rebuild mine also. I like the look of the screw on lid.

Re: Original Master Cylinder?

Heres the one I just had restored and an NOS cap. I was mistaken its NOT a Delco it has the "B" for Bendix .

4 of my OG trucks still have that master, one 1965 GMC ,2 1966 GMCs and the Gold Chevy 4X4 .All are original Power Brake trucks. Parts book lists one for trucks with power brakes and states Bendix.

These have a casting number of 618082 and are dated. I use Lonestar Caliper for stainless steel sleeve and rebuilding of the masters. The one above that I had restored the bore rust pitted and the piston was stuck. Now Its better than new.

Re: Original Master Cylinder?

you don't have to rebuild it just go to autozone or where ever and they have them rebuilt. they will ak you if you have the screw on type or the clamp on type. they carry both.

Re: Original Master Cylinder?

My cylinder is the same as yours 60-66. Seems to me all the ones I've seen have been on power brake trucks. Thanks for the rebuilder info, I'm going to try them out. gimmy, That might be an option but I'll be restoring this truck as close to factory correct as I can, so dates count.
