Thinking on going HEI but can I
I was told that there was a way, to keep my original distributor and still use Non-points?
I am new to the whole idea and I think it'd be a lot better for my truck because of the constant issues I am running unto Engine info I6 270 What is the best out there? What do I need to look out for? Because my original Distributor is loose feeling I can wobble it and pick it up a hair?, BUT it won't let me adjust the clamp. I've made great progress on this truck so far

Re: Thinking on going HEI but can I
Before HEI this
http://www.pertronix.com/prod/ig/ignitor/default.aspx was the hot ticket. Still is for those that want a stock look. Get another distributor and rebuild it, yours sounds like yours is shot anyway. Do not get sucked into buying one of the chinese knockoffs if you go the HEI route. On stovebolt.com there is a tech article on modifying new six HEI for the 235.

Re: Thinking on going HEI but can I
How can I get mine rebuilt?
All it needs is Bushings I'd assume? The rotor isn't loose, like it'd be if the Dist was worn out I'll upload a video of me moving the Distributor Plus my engine is a 270 I6 Orrie All it could be is why it isn't running worth a crap, it could be the vacuum advance?

Re: Thinking on going HEI but can I
i think pertronix is still the hot ticket for distributors
cheap and effective for long term use, same original pertronix in my son's 68 elco for 14 yrs it doesn't side load the distributor and did i mention cheap? either way you need to get your distributor loose; either make a wrench or buy a distributor wrench

Re: Thinking on going HEI but can I
Check with GMC Bubba, http://www.lindertech.com/bhrs/gm_6_dist_elec_conv.htm His shop rebuilds distributors and converts them to electronic using easy to find parts.
The Pertronix is a good unit if you have a good distributor to begin with. One of the selling points is that you can stick a set of points and a condenser in the truck kit bag and if the Pertronix acts up you can swap out the electronic piece for the points and condenser and get home. The key is that your distributor has to be in good shape no matter what ignition setup you run as a conversion kit isn't going to heal up a worn out distributor.
