new to me 84 now i need help

picked it up thursday ran good for about 50 miles got to my home town and it died replaced plugs and wires and its running again but the carb it pouring fuel out front side middle of carb body looks like maybe a gasket there. it is a 2 barrell #17057113. looks like the carb came off a 77 nova according to a source i found online. the engine is a 350 crate #10066036 i believe. what would be a replacement carb i could use? it has the 350 tranny. would like to swap on a 4 barrel and intake but budget says not right now. this is supposed to be my daily driver so i need to get it running.

Cool Re: new to me 84 now i need help

Found a rebuild kit @ autozone. Did not do a full rebuild just replace all gaskets and it seems to have fixed leak. Then truck would not start. Took off starter alternator and battery had all tested ok. Put all back on and it's running. Now it wants to die when I give it gas.

There are a lot of pieces I wonder if I can remove. Most are smog related parts.

1. The black ball up by drivers firewall. Is it smog or vacuum related. Can I remove it?
2. The black canister drivers front near grille. smog? Can I remove it?
3. The passenger side exhaust manifold has a loose piece that spins around and in and out a think a smog tube used to be there. Now it's an exhaust leak.

#1 is a vacuum canister that works vents and flaps on an AC truck. Leave it be.
#2 and 3 can be removed, they are smog equipment.

The charcoal can won't hurt anything, I'd say leave it. Its actually a pretty slick way to vent the gas tank rather than just venting into the air.

Is that the original color? I'd be curious to know the paint code if you have time to check the tag. My '84 would have been about the same color I suspect.

there is a piece sticking out near bottom of passenger exhaust manifold. it moves in and out and spins around? what is it? can it be removed? or welded shut? i assume it was smog related or some kinda heat riser?

Re: new to me 84 now i need help

Awesome! Thanks for posting that info. That is the color alright. According to the ZY4 code, it was blue with silver on top and below the belt line.

The N67 when coupled with the YJU and XJU tire code means it had 15"x7" rally wheels vs the 15"x8" if I'm not mistaken, of course you're free to install whatever you like now!

If you haven't, check out the Vehicle Information Kit available online. It will tell you some more about the options you have and what other options were available. Unfortunately the 1984 copy is kinda poor quality, but you can decipher it for the most part and alot of the same information can be found in the '83 or '85 versions.

http://gmheritagecenter.com/gm-herit...tion-kits.html

That thing on the exhaust manifold could be (or be what's left of) the damper that was used to hold heat in the exhaust manifold to help warm up the stove pipe quicker. It's not really necessary, in extreme cold weather it can help make the engine more driveable more quickly, but otherwise it just rattles or gets stuck closed. For some reason they never get stuck open, go figure...

For the stumble, it's possible the accelerator pump is not working correctly, not giving you the extra shot it needs when the throttle blades swing open. It could also contribute to a hard start, if you have to pump it more than a couple times as it's not squirting fuel in to prime the motor.
