4x4 drop on a K-5? Is it possible?
So I know many think it unthinkable to convert a 4x4 to a 2x4, while others see no reason to hesitate at all. My son and I picked up a 72 k-5 CST 4x4 this last year with a ton of options and very clean. Going to be a build with my son, for his first ride. He prefers the 2x4 look, specifically dropped, instead of the 4 wheel drive.
Is it possible to lower it some with retaining the 4x4 suspension? Give it about the ride height of a standard 2x4, or maybe even a bit lower? Thinking we could get more the ride height he would prefer, while not "changing forever" a pretty pristine, original, well optioned ride. That way if he ultimately wanted 4x4 we haven't cut t up, and/or if he decides down the road to sell, he will still have a pretty original ride. Anyone done it? Kits available? Thanks.....just want to get on this project before he decides he would rather just drive MY 68 C-10 short wide. |

Would be easy to take apart the leaf spring packs and remove second leaf from top which would drop the truck about 2-3" overall front and back, just need 4 center bolts for the leaf springs to put each one back together, not a big deal and can retain the same shocks, would ride a bit less like a truck too.

IIRC the oil pan and the front diff will be your limiting factors. Too much drop and that diff gets real close to the oil pan when the suspension flexes. Of course with enough cash you can solve any problem you will run across.

Seriously think it's that easy? That would be a no brainer decision to do that if it would really bring it down 2-3 inches.

71 is right, just a few things to look out for, things is if you don't want that much drop pull the 3rd leaf from top out, so 2 down from main leaf and will drop closer to 2" which may be all you want. So basically put truck frame on stands, put stands under diff then pull ubolts out, one side at a time then jack up that side with a floor jack, remove stand and slowly let jack down to remove the leaves from the top main leaf, may have to use a punch on center bolt, let diff drop enough to drop all leaves, pull out 3rd leaf install new center bolt jack up to get bolt to come thru the leaves, install nut and install ubolts again, you prob know all this but just in case you don't. easy stuff. Good luck, oh ya forgot one thing, remove bottom end of shock before anything or won't drop enough.

The bump stops on my k5 are pretty close to the axle and mine is stock height. Might want to see where your clearances are with a tape measure.

The bump stops will also need to be trimmed a bit too, no big deal.
