Can I ??
Hello everyone. I have a 1972 4x4, (2)85 Suburbans & 89 Suburban. My question is can I take the suspesion, front & rear, front & rear ends & swap everything off of one of the subs. to the 72 pickup? The reason I am doing this is because one of the 85's I plan on using has a 454, 700r w, shift kit, and rebuilt posi-track rear end. Just wanted to swap everything. Sorry for the long post. Thanks for your time.

First off, Welcome to the board. You will find lots of great people Here.
Your Axles will fit fine, the biggest problem I forsee is mounting the t-case. I don't know what tcase you have in the 85 burb, but I think it should be a 205. The burb crossmembers should fit the 72, so you might have to move them (maybe, worst case). The other problem is a BB distributor will hit the firewall unless you beat hell out of the firewall with a hammer, Move everything forward or do a body lift. The shift lever on the 72 will be funky cuz it only knows 1-3 rather than D321. You will need to re-do the brake plumbing and move the proportioning valves. The wiring might be a lot of work due to the 85's computer and smog crap. Most of your problems will probably be details of newer electronic paraphenalia if you decide to do all that. Might be easier to throw an Edebrock intake and a carb on it and scrap the crap otherwise it might be a frustrating process. Good luck

Thanks for the welcome.
The 85 w/ the 454 has already been desmogged, it has a edelbrock intake and a holley carb. I thought, or was told, that the frames on subs were differnt then PU, if not the case, would everything fit over? Thanks again |

It should have a 208 transfer.Put the big block in.You will have to drill some new holes to mount the longer 700 trans any how..The shifting is no problem.I have a 700 in my 2wd with original linkage.I think there is a how to on putting a 700 in a 67-72 with a 205 transfer at www.coloradok5.com I would keep the 205 myself.

Thanks for all the great info. There shouldn't be any problem with swapping the front end & rear end? Or is that a bad idea?

I recently asked the same basic Question
what I found is the 73 and newer rear axle spring perches are 42.5" center to center. the 72 and older trucks perches are 40" center to center. the front axle should bolt rght up 72 and older front springs are 44" long. 73 and newer trucks use a 46" long spring approx. you might find something different but I think it's pretty accurate. |

Well
your t-case should be a 208 slip yoke. You could keep it or go with the 205 matting a 205 to 700r is not to hard. there are two ways I know to do it One is to have a shorter output shaft put in. (costly) The way I did it on my 83 was to get a spacer and take off about 1/8 of the output shaft on the 700 and another 1/8 off the input shaft on the 205. If you don't it will bind up and not seal very good if at all. The problem will be the Axels the rear is the one I have some dealings with. it will not bolt in the pad will have to be moved as wll your shock mounts. well at lest one of those anyway. there are kits to add the 700r to your older truck. And as some of the others have said you will have to dril some holes for the cross member on my 83 it moved back one inch if I remember right. your brake lines should be fine. If you use your old springs from the 70 you'll be ok if you use the springs from the sub they are longger some are 52in and some others 56in Have fun Cethern Last edited by Cethern; 01-03-2004 at 01:19 AM. |
