Gm tilt column problems!
So like most older gm trucks mine had a loose column, so yesterday I actually tore it all the way down and removed the 4 bolts, cleaned them and put red loctite on them and reassembled everything. Assembly went very well but now my steering wheel is loose. Not the column but just the wheel moving back and forth. Also it seems like the lock plate was flush with the column when I took it apart but now it sticking past the column. I've had it back apart 2 more times now and didn't see anything wrong. I've been on many sites and read many forums, even watched a few videos of other people doing it. I'm not sure what I did wrong. Also the truck is a 1987 chevy 1/2 ton.

If you could snap a picture it might be better seen.
I think that the bearing under the plate spring maybe in upside down or the plate is not fully seated with the lock ring. Did you use the lock plate tool to set it in place? |

Yeah I'll try to get some pictures taken. Yes I used the correct tool to seat the plate and lock ring. As far as the bearing goes I didn't remove it, the grease held it in place

Re: Gm tilt column problems!
Have you checked the lower bearing? The upper shaft has two bearings, one right below the lock plate and a second in the bottom of the upper tilt housing. If the lower one is missing it can cause what yours is doing.
