Did I mess up?

I recently had first crack at a 220k 2001 corvette ls1still in the car, running and everything; electronics, all of the accessories, computers and such. I passed on it a 2 grand. The catch was I had to pull the motor. I thought 2k was fair if it was already pulled but being as though it wasn't I offered 1500. I didn't have the money at that moment but could have easily got it by the weekend after it was posted. Did I screw up? I probably would have had it torn down and rebuilt with that kind of mileage, so I couldn't just through it in my suburban.
What is a reasonable price for a high mile 5.7? How about low mile? I'm really new to the ls scene but I am pretty sure that is the way I am gonna go. Any and all feedback is welcome.
My son wanted me to put the banana in. Cheers.

Re: Did I mess up?

Yeah you did good to pass. I see LS1's around here for about $2500 with less than half that many miles and not needing a rebuild.

You did good by passing. Keep looking on CL. There are plenty of deals out there for less money and pulled.

Re: Did I mess up?

don't forget about the 5.3 motors they are cheap and everywhere. I think that is the majority of what is ran around here. They are considered a gen 3 like the ls1 so they are very similar. You may be aware of that and want the ls1 but thought I would throw my 2 cents in.
Or you could go with the 6.0 truck motor.
lots of options.

Check ebay too, they pop up there all the time.

Also if you're a member on ls1tech.com, there's almost always a few on there.

Re: Did I mess up?

car-part.com find truck/van motors all day long.

Skip looking specifically for an LS1, most of the time you'll overpay for a beat-to-death motor that only makes 15hp more than the trucks, and has a host of other early-model issues like piston slap and oil usage.

Re: Did I mess up?

I can't believe how some people get wrapped up in the "ZOMGCORVETTEPARTS!!!!!11" thing.

Good work on passing. LS1 is old news. Even corvette guys are putting iron truck motors in their rigs when they wanna go really fast with boost

Re: Did I mess up?

The friend I have doing the body work when I have money has a seized up4.8/5.3 he said I could have for 200 bucks. Is that a good deal? I think I want to go bigger than a 5.3 though. I will do some towing, lots of deer hunting in it. I was hoping to get around 15mpg when all is said and done. That's why I was thinking corvette, if I could get 350 horse with 15 mpg I would be tickled pink. I have been thinking going with the 6.0 backed up by a NV4500, or get a gear splitter on the 4 speed. Is 15mpg out question with a 6.0. I don't need anything radical either, relatively stock is just fine.
My wife and I are going to refinance our house to do our kitchen and maybe a bathroom, so I told her I was going to take out some more to put into the suburban, it is only going to appreciate right. The crazy part was she said okay so I have to get it done before she changes her mind, haha.
Thanks for all the responses, everyone has been great. Cheers

Re: Did I mess up?

If its actually seized, I'd pass or offer him $100 as a builder-block. There are soooo many of these around that there isnt' a reason to really "Settle". That being said, a cammed 5.3 will have no problem putting out 350hp and getting over 15mpg freeway.

I have a big cammed 6.0 with about the heaviest 2wd drivetrain possible, and I still can touch 18-19 freeway if I'm careful.

Re: Did I mess up?

You can bore a 4.8 or 5.3 block 3mm over, & make that 5.7? IMHO, stick with the truck blocks...."Poke" a 6 liter block .030, & you have 370 cubes & set up right, knockin on the 500 hp door! No need to spend big money, on the aluminum blocks for the outlay Longhorn

Re: Did I mess up?

I'm curious about that gear splitter your talking about with your 4 speed? I was thinking of putting a NV4500 behind my 5.3, but just don't want to change everything around that I just finished to accommodate the engine, plus those trannys aren't cheap.

Nevermind, just looked into them, and surely don't want to move my tranny and T-case back 7.5 inches since I already moved them forward 2.

Re: Did I mess up?

What would a fair price for a 6.0 be? It looks like they are referred to as LQ4 or LQ9, is that correct? I don't know nothing bout nothing when it comes to these new motors so I am learning as I go. Cheers

Re: Did I mess up?

Thanks C-10. Tons of info on there. LQ9 looks like the engine I need. Little bit o aftermarket stuff and it seems like I could be ticklin 400hp and mid to high teens gas mileage. Now I need to find a wrecked Cadillac. Cheers.

Get you a 5.3 with a cam, tune and headers and you will have 400hp, a 6.0(lq4) with same your near 450. Lq9 with same and your near 475.

Re: Did I mess up?

Jerrod that is why I went with a 5.3. It's a lc9 all aluminum block, stock at 320 hp. So if you take all the smog crap off and add cold air intake and headers and/or free flowing exhaust. You have to be at 350-360. With nothing but a stock motor oh and the 2011 lc9 had a 6l80 trans so stock 308 gears work fine. Like having 373 with a 4l80.
If you put a cam watch out!!!

Re: Did I mess up?

Hey bud. I bought a lq9 from a Caddy ESV, cost me 1900 bucks with 133k. I don't care what anybody tells you, don't buy anything unless you can SEE IT and HEAR IT run first ! Good Luck.

Re: Did I mess up?

thanks 80 sierra. sorta what I was thinking but it is kinda tough to find one in the car that runs. most of the wrecks I have seen on the 'puter are destroyed in the front. It looks like an ordeal just to get em out. I was hoping to have it done by deer season/October but I am not in a real rush, so I can wait for a decent deal. This thread has been great. I think I would probably lean towards the 6.0.

Re: Did I mess up?

That's a pretty cool article. Beyond my skill level, and my wifes patience level. I have a 95 z71 that I have get rid of and thought about parting out but I haven't done it. I would sell the whole truck for a grand but I cant even sell it for that. That would be some of my swap money.
