I believe automatic transmissions had the heater hose routed back to the radiator, probably to provide a little bit of early heat to the transmission cooler inside the radiator. Manual transmissions had the heater hose routed back to the water pump.
My truck is a factory manual trans and has the heater core output connected to the radiator.
