Brownie Box in a C10?
So ive got a 292 with 3 sp and 3.08 gears in my 65 c10, looking for a way to get over drive. Been searching for a 3spd overdrive so I can get back my 3.73 gears, when I stumbled on the brownie boxes in the big trucks. Anyone put one in a half or 3/4 ton? Would it work? I think it would be pretty fricken awesome to have an auxillary tranny with a low and overdrive. What do you think?

Re: Brownie Box in a C10?
I have seen a few pickups with the Brown Lipe 5531, which later became the Spicer 5831 installed. These were the smaller of the 3 speeds, there are a couple of different o/d ratios available. I believe that the brown lipe had the higher o/d ratio available of the two, would have to check my notes. They can be kinda nice to have especially for adding another O/D for long trips to keep your rpms down, as long as you are keeping it within the power band and not causing the engine to lug all of the time. I think that you would be happier with an O/D trans for driveability... just my 2 cents.. BTW is your truck a sb?

No, its a long fleetside. Yea finding an od trans will prob be cheaper and easier, just think the idea of an auxillary trans would be super cool, and If I ever find one, I might try it. Also with the brownie, do you shift while driving, or does it have to be stopped?

Re: Brownie Box in a C10?
It is definately cool! I would have one in my 61 if I was able to squeeze it between the t -case and trans. You shift them on the fly, it is basically just another transmission that you can use to "split" the gears of your main transmission by shifting it through its gears while in each of your main speeds. You could also just leave it in O/D or any other gear and drive normally. They can be a blast to drive!

Re: Brownie Box in a C10?
Quite some time ago when I went to go look at some parts advertised for sale, I saw a truck being built where the guy had modified a second 3 speed trans to be used as an auxilariy trans. I don't remember any details of it other than there was a short driveshaft between the two. That and I thought it was pretty cool. I suppose if a guy had the means, and more time than money, something like that would be possible.

Re: Brownie Box in a C10?
Not quite the cool factor but it seems an NV 4500 (2WD version) would also solve your needs. Would be easier to gather parts to install & repair. Just a thought.

Re: Brownie Box in a C10?
The nv4500 is a heavy duty 5speed manual, if your going to keep your 6, then I would look into an nv3500, they are good to 330ft lbs of torque.

Re: Brownie Box in a C10?
Budman56,
not real sure on price, but I might be interested in it myself. How much did they want for it? Looks a lot smaller than the Spicer 5831 that seems common, so shipping might not be quite as brutal from CA. |
