&00r4 with 383 stroker
I have a 383 stroker 450 hp motor coming from the engine factory. I would like to have an overdrive trans like the 700r4 behind it to save on fuel. Queston is: will the 700r4 work with the above motor without having to have some kind of electronic controler to make it work. I searched the site for info but, never really got the answer I wanted. Thanks in advance for any help/advice offered.
Thanks, Spanky |

Re: &00r4 with 383 stroker
The only thing you would need electronics for is if you wanted to electronically control the torque converter lockup. 4th gear, which is overdrive, is mechanical. You'll need to ensure you hook up the TV system correctly. Check out a setup called TV made Easy.
If you want to electronically control the lockup there are a number of kits you can use as well that are pretty simple to hook up. |

Re: &00r4 with 383 stroker
The 700R4's are not electronically controlled. You will need to be absolutely sure to setup and adjust the TV cable exactly as it should be. Otherwise you will burn up the trans in a very short time. Also the TC lockup needs to be wired up correctly. There are many, many, many threads in the 'Engine and Drivetrain' section about the 700R4.
You will have to have a very well built 700R4 to hold up behind that 450HP 383. Most guys that know those tranny's will tell you it won't last. If it were me, I would just go with a 4L80E, which is an electronically controlled trans. Yes it is more money, but you won't have to worry about it holding up.

Re: &00r4 with 383 stroker
If you have a 700 or a 200 built for it it will be fine. Your going to need a good convertor to go with it. The TV cable is very important to get right and a TV made easy setup works well. Find out who in your area is building race trans and get one done local so you can have the support in getting it right when it goes in.

Re: &00r4 with 383 stroker
I have a 383 in an 87 K5. The original one burned up in about 100 miles. I had one rebuilt from a race Trans shop and I like it. Used the TCI lockup kit with vacuum switch and it works well. I played around with manual lockup dash switches but ultimately didn't like that option.
