What do you do when you find lead?
I'm working on cutting out the rust, and welding in patch panels on the cab. When I started tacking in the upper cowl panel, the metal started dripping out.
I can't tell how thick it is, but is there a trick, or procedure to welding this in? |

Torch off what you can and while hot wire brush it. Then you have to grind the lead off so you can weld. You should be able to put some spot weld hole in the upper panel and remove the lead around those holes and weld to the lower panel that's slipped under the upper. when you done use all-metal or something similar on the seam not bondo or you could re-lead it

Most bodymen do exactly what Dave said to do. Heat the lead with torch, it doesn't take that much heat and even a little propane torch on a handheld bottle will usually melt it and brush it off and then do your welding. These trucks were finished off with lead at the factory and it isn't some patch work that was done later unless the truck was damaged in that area at some time.

wear gloves and a mask when you do- lead poisoning is NOT something you want to deal with.

Proper safety equipment is a real good idea along with having plenty of ventilation and if you are working in a garage attached to the house I'd roll it outside to do it.
