Vehicle Speed Sensor
Quick question.
'84 C10. Originally came w/ a 305 and 700R4. Would I have a VSS (vehicle speed sensor) already? What does it look like/where is it located? I was under the impression the 700R needed VSS for TC lockup, so I'm hoping I already have one. In the middle of a TBI swap and I need to get one if I don't already have one. |

Re: Vehicle Speed Sensor
You should have one. I used a VSS from Jags that Run when I did mine- the 2PRS.

due to the engine vacuum constantly opening and closing the switch , converter lockup was always in and out , kind of annoying. Desert |

Re: Vehicle Speed Sensor
The 700R4 had a vacuum controlled TCC like ^^^
If your 83 has VSS it's off the speedometer for the overly complicated early 1980s electronic cruise control system.

Re: Vehicle Speed Sensor
Do you have factory cruise control? If so, you should already have a VSS on the back of the speedometer.
This is what it typically looks like. Pink/Black stripe - 12V+ ign Black w/ white stripe - Ground Brown - 2k PPM output to ECM Extra yellow connector - 2k PPM output to cruise unit. You can get these optical VSS units off any 80's car or truck with cruise, or TBI; or both. Mine was from a 84 El Camino. You'll see this if you have no VSS. Any 81+ GM speedo has the provision for the optical VSS. Get the little screw too, you'll need it. These pics are from when I installed a VSS for my TPI conversion in my 86. Works flawless, but grab a few from the pick a part, my first one didn't work, these are close to 30 year old electronics. They are easy to find. Pull the cluster, and trace the 3-wire ribbon back to the green (or yellow) box. Get the whole thing including pigtail, You'll need a small 5.5 or 6mm socket for the screw in the speedo. |

Re: Vehicle Speed Sensor
I know this thread is a little old but... How does the cruise control use the speed reference? In other words I want to use a Jags 2prs on my 87 to replace the green box behind speedometer. Do I hook the yellow and brown wires to the 2prs and ground the other wire on the 2Prs? I would like the ECM to use the reference. And I want cruise to work.
