tricks for removing bumper bolts?
wondering if there's any tricks out there for removing the front bumper bolts. was trying to take off the front bumper and one of the bolts just spins as I'm turning the nut- guessing the square hole is rounded. any tips besides cutting it off? thanks

Re: tricks for removing bumper bolts?
Grab a large pair of vice grips, hold the bolt at the end of the thread, then slip a wrench on the nut and loosen it until you can switch places with the grip and the wrench.

Re: tricks for removing bumper bolts?
thanks. it's not that I don't have common sense (I swear), it's just that I don't want to make old issues on the truck worse. I'm an engine guy learning to do body work, welding etc. this site i where I spend alot of time now.

Re: tricks for removing bumper bolts?
if they are old and rusty i use a long handled 1/2 ratchet and break them off (righty tighty). other wise you fight it until the head spins

Re: tricks for removing bumper bolts?
Ive had to drill the heads out of them also. Had a set that were so bad you couldn't get ahold of the bolt from the back and the nuts were only 3/4 there from corrosion. Just drilled a 1/2" hole through the head of the bolt and knocked the caps off.

The smoke wrench is your best friend when working on a 50 year old truck. I used mine (MAPP gas torch) this past weekend to get the thermostat housing bolts out of my '63 230. Might have been the original t-stat in there. ...ned.

Re: tricks for removing bumper bolts?
if you have access to a welder, you can weld a nut to the front, or cap, of the carriage bolt and then use a wrench on the front and back...
