Key switch keeper?
I have a 77 C10 and I'm having trouble figuring out what holds the key switch into the steering column. On several of the switches I've found in the wrecking yard have a screw that goes into a slot on the bottom of the key unit. Not the case in mine.
I'm talking about the key lock, NOT the ignition switch. Anybody know what keeps these in place?

There is a small spring loaded tab near the end of the lock cylinder that holds it in place. There should be a narrow slot in the steering column housing where you can stick a small screwdriver or other tool in to push & release that tab.

Sometimes there is a thin bit of metal casting "flash" covering the slot ... just poke the tool through. I think it was around 1979 that GM changed over to the screw that retains the lock cylinder. |

Mine doesn't have tab on it. The problem isn't getting the key cylinder out. It's getting it to stay in. There's no tabs on the cylinder and there's no place to put a keeper screw in the aluminum housing.

like he said there is a white nylon piece that takes the place of the screw its kinda rectangle shape and there is a metal ( I think copper colored) flat kinda spring in that and it holds the switch in place in almost the same spot as where a screw would go

On the brighter side, if the cylinder is falling out, you don't have to tear the column to put the new one in. I have been getting Delco cylinders from the dealership; should run about $20 or so.
