no fuse box for certain old trucks?

hi.

i have a 1957 chevrolet 3100 and am looking to rewire most of it.

oddly, i can't seem to find the fuse box.

I think I read someplace that some old trucks did not have a fuse box.
could that be true for my truck?

if it is true, instead of a fusebox, what did they use?

thanks

When I got my '53 it only had two glass fuses on the firewall under a little black cover marked parking lamps/stop lamps. The head lights are protected by some sort of circuit breaker built into the switch and that is it for fuse protection. Look on your firewall for a box. Bet you have something comparable.

I had nothing but the one in the headlamp switch when i rewired mine. The fuses xaircav speaks of i think were for the regulator if you are still using a generator.

So you are correct.

Fuse panel were an option. Some in 47 and later to 54 had a 10 or 12 fuses box under the hood but it would have had to be a high option truck. Radio, heater, cigar lighter, signals. I think the most I have ever found in a base model was two fuses for tail and brake lights, headlights have a breaker built in

The TF truck fuse box would be located under the LH side of the dash. I can get pictures if curious. As mentioned, not all trucks were equipped with said box. A later fuse box with plastic fuses would make it easier to buy replacements if you have problems while you're out on the road.

My 59 did not originally have one. In the 80's I used one out of a 70's buick a neighbor was wrecking out. This time I put in a EZ wire 21 circuit, if you are staying stock with no ac, and stock steering column you could get by with a simpler 12 circuit hot rod type.

Re: no fuse box for certain old trucks?

every task force truck i've owned had a fuse panel, maybe only 2 or 3 fuses on it but it had a small panel
maybe the radio and horn are fused, who knows; all the electrical problems i've had, never popped one of them.
heater is fused in line, as is the radio.

most of your protection was in the headlight switch, the main junction is your horn relay.
the battery feed in the pic came from the horn relay, the single fuse is for the dome and instrument panel lights
there are 2 bi-metal springs that act as auto-reset breakers; one is for the headlights and the other is for all other lights
