Steering Column Orginality Q's

I have a true truck tilt column on the way, but I know it needs some paint work as its scratched decently. While my truck isn't near original, there are some things I want to do original like.

1. Were tilts ever color matched to the truck, or all black?
1a. If color matched, was the whole column color matched, or up to the firewall flange, then black from there into engine bay? (2nd appears to be the way my fixed column is)
2. Indicator housing, only came black, c/m, or chrome for higher trim levels?

I think my truck had a color matched column when I bought it ...but that was so many years ago, and now I am an old fart now (and I don't remember so good). After my frame off, mine is color matched. I don't care for pimped-out chrome columns.... that's kind of like walking around with your pants hanging down (not my style). I'd recommend color match.

Black column is the way to go in your late truck. But those that are backfitting into earlier trucks I recommend color matching the column and wheel to keep it stock looking.

Originally they were black. Nothing wrong with color matching though.

ok, since they were all black. Was it high gloss, satin, or flat?

Re: Steering Column Orginality Q's

My stock column is not a tilt, but FWIW here's mine.

As you can see, it was color matched to the door panels, visors, etc. The column was painted all the way to the bottom (carrying through the firewall).

Like I said, it's not a tilt, but there ya go.

I'm not sure. I thought I'd read on here that they were semi-gloss. So that's what I did. My original 69 non-tilt black column was gloss, or it got that way because I waxed it every time I waxed the truck.

Its my understanding that all TILTS were black (semi-gloss) in 71-72.
