1970 c20 hitch class 1,2 or 3?
Trying to figure out what class my hitch is on my c20. The receiver is integrated into the bumper which is bolted to the frame at 4 points on top of the frame rail and below the frame rail. Looks really stong and robust to me but no where on the receiver does it say what the rating is. I cant post pics from under the truck right now, but i included a pic of the receiver bumper. Can anyone chime in here with how I might know for sure what its rated to? I want to pull a small toy hauler total weight loaded will be a few hundred pounds short of 5000lbs.
thanks, paul |

Re: 1970 c20 hitch class 1,2 or 3?
I just bought a hitch from Uhaul for my blazer and it has 4 bolts where the bracket the holds the bumper and 4 bolts further froward next to the fuel tank. Its rated as a class 3 hitch. It came with grade 5 bolts but I put in all zink coated grade 8 bolts instead to make sure it will be extra strong. Not sure what yours may be and if there is no sticker you probably wont know for sure.

It depends on the exact thikcness of all metal and what the weld area is. To know for sure, you'd have to have an engineer analyze it. It looks strong enough for your application but its hard to know for sure short of doing analysis or finding the exact same one with a rating.
Are there spots to connect safety chains to? The small holes in that plate wouldn't allow a strong forged hook like you'd want with a 3000lb plus trailer.

Re: 1970 c20 hitch class 1,2 or 3?
Yea, up underneath the bumper is the holes for saftey chains.
Since I posted this question I have done some running around to trailer shops and they assured me that pulling 5000# with my truck should be no problem. All the metal is solid steel not hollow pipe. It will handle way over 5000#. They could not tell me class it was but it was more than 3. Thanks for all the responses! paul |
