'95 6.5 Diesel Stalling out

OK, my 1995 3500 w/ 6.5 diesel started coughing last week when accelerating. So, I figured fuel filter. No big deal, I keep one behind the seat. So I swapped it out yesterday. I drove it another 100 miles yesterday and the problem was still there.

In fact, it is now worse. Driving home last night it started coughing and sputtering more, and even died at low speed/low idle while turning around in a parking lot.

This morning, it died while accelerating out of my little boys school. I brought it home and it just doesn't want to keep running.

I start it up, runs fine for about 20 seconds and then sputters a few times like it's struggling to get fuel and dies. I try to give it a little fuel and its like there is nothing there.

Anybody have thoughts on this???

Re: '95 6.5 Diesel Stalling out

The PMD is the first thing that comes to mind. But,I had a problem in my mechanical injected '92 for about 6 weeks that was a new one on me. Long story short,I ended up dropping the tank and replacing the float/sending unit. I had replaced the original 1 1/2 ago "just because" I had the tank out fixing fuel lines. The gauze was restricting this new fuel. You can't see it. 100# of air doesn't blow it clear. It's like a wax I guess. I left the gauze on the new one and we'll see.

The lift pump you can hear run a little bit after the truck is shut off. It's up under the cab.

Re: '95 6.5 Diesel Stalling out

Mine first acted like it was running out of gas when the tank was low. It would lag and recover. It became more frequent, not just when tank was low, then started stalling. It would start and get going a while before stalling. I had replaced the lift pump, oil pressure switch (OPS),and filter a few months earlier (different symptom). I replaced the filter again,by-passed the OPS/wired pump to switch, got new lift pump on warranty, blew air through the fuel lines back through tank. It would run, seem fine a while, then start lagging. so,I pulled the tank. Everything looked fine, clean inside,no obstructions. I pictured a candy wrapper or something crazy stuffed in there blocking the pickup. The gauze in the pickup looked fine to the eye. I cut it off and looked into light and saw nothing. Blew 100# of air and didn't leave a ring, but I noticed it didn't feel like all the air came through and some blew back on my hand holding the nozzle. Replaced the float/pickup under warranty and all is good. I hear the bio-diesel is causing problems much like the ethenol in gas. It forms into like a wax. I don't know what could have been defective about that gauge/pickup but maybe that was at fault

Re: '95 6.5 Diesel Stalling out

Mine has had the PMD relocated. I think it is newer

It broke down on the way home from the beach. Rode the rest of the way home on a rollback.

3 hrs into the 4 hr ride. It started to lose speed, slowly, 55 mph, 53... 51... 49... 45... 42... 40... Finally, I was limping up the shoulder and it was like it was losing fuel pressure. I pulled over to try to diagnose and it started to chug and died. Let it cool for 20 minutes and it drove like a champ for another 10 miles and did the same thing.

So far, I've changed fuel filter twice, Turbo Boost Sensor.

Very frustrated. Any feedback?!? Lift pump? Fuel pump? Sending Unit?!?
