Drag Race Class Confusion

I realize that class rules, specs and regulations are in abundance all over the internet, but it seems when I look up classes, the terminology is for those that are veteran racers that already understand, or at least have a good idea of the class they should run.
To make matters worse, it seems as though a lot of classes are relatively the same to me, and I can't figure out the difference.

Could someone please "mentor" me in getting started and assist me with rules and regulations?
To get the ball rolling, my local Drag ways Farmington, NC and North Wilksboro, NC are all 1/8 mile.

Currently my truck is a '72 C/10,
350ci SBC, but was originally a 6cyl., if that makes a difference,
TH350 tranny with a shift kit, B&M MegaShifter
The only mods to the '73 engine is a VooDoo cam with a max .504 lift
HEI dizzy,
Holley 670 Street Avenger carb,
Edelbrock RPM Air Gap intake,
Aluminum heads with 2.02/160 valves
Full length headers with flowmasters
Original 12 bolt rear, w/3:73 open diff (for now)
Street tires, 295/50/15 @ 4 corners
Lap belt only, no bars or cage of course

What class would I fall under with this set up?

Near future modifications:
All the above, but mostly forged internals after rebuild possibly bored .30 over,
Small baby blower (Weiand 142 or 144 between 5-8lbs boost)
Wide slicks with 15x10 or 15x12,

Forced induction and/or slicks toss me into another class, right?

My apologies for lack of knowledge and any vital info that I didn't mention.
All advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Sid

Re: Drag Race Class Confusion

Farmington runs Friday night thunder and I think that is the street cars. They do have a street class that is part of the points system. To get started go and watch. Look at the tech inspection and that staging lanes. Watch the way the street cars handle the water box. Most with treaded tires will drive around it. Keeps them from draging water to the starting line. Watch the way folks stage and how the tree works. Go to the other end and look at the way they go through the traps and get off the track. Look at the return road and where you get your time slip. All this will help you when you go to run for the first time. They run some fast cars down there with some of the racing they do.

Re: Drag Race Class Confusion

One more thing. Once you get out of the street class and move up the next one with the stuff you have is the foot brake class. That place has a lot of hook on the starting line and if you have any weak links in your drive train "Mr Sticky" will find them.

Re: Drag Race Class Confusion

See if your local track has a sportsman or street no electronics class and just get started . They will check out or tech your truck . Make sure the battary hold down is sufficent , the radiator has and over flow catch can , that you have seatbelts , all your lugnuts are in place . Things like this . I started officially bracket racing 2.5 years ago after bracket racing for years . Just do it . You wont be great at first , but you will get better .

Thanks guys, the more I read up on classes and points..etc., I think I would be satisfied running test and tune/grudge racing to start out. It will get me on the track and familiar with the way things are done with the experience and advice of veterans such as yourselves.
Thanks again for your help, and I will mos def attend Friday Night Thunder at the Farm on the 23rd.
See you at the track

Re: Drag Race Class Confusion

I first went down the drag strip in 1977. Ran local bracket races and IHRA and NHRA national events. It can be adicting and you can spend a fortune if you want. I sold the dragster and all my drag race stuff 2 years ago. You live and die by.001 of a second and that takes a little getting used to. Have fun with it.
