Rear axle idenification ?
Hi, Guys.
I just installed a rear axle in my 55 Chevy 3100 second series 1/2 ton pickup. I finished installing my camaro front clip. I got this rear deferential from a friend. He said its out of a camaro or a chevelle. I'm not sure what its out of. I thought maybe some one could tell me. I have a number off the axle of ARG72542 but no match on line. It had some bushings on the top of the housing for some arms. I cut them off. I took some measurements from the camaro inside wheel it came out to be 54-1/4" then i took the same measurements at the rear axle it came out 54-1/4" so I think it maybe a camaro rear axle. But I want to be sure. Here are some pictures.maybe some one may be able to tell. Thanks all -Larry |

Re: Rear axle idenification ?
i can't id it, but i can tell you that it is not a 3rd gen camaro.
3rd gen 82-92 has the torque bar boss cast into the front of the housing. the camaro clip lowered your front end a lot, how much depends on how you have it welded in. you have the rearend on top of the stock springs for the stock ride height. your truck will have a lot of rake built into it you can flip the axle on top of the springs to level out your ride flipping the axle lowers the rear bumper about 7''

Re: Rear axle idenification ?
I'd say it's from the Chevelle size cars, what generation I'm not sure. Normally we measure rear axles by measuring from wheel mounting surface on the axle to wheel mounting surface on the axle as backing plate to backing plate doesn't really mean squat when it comes to figuring how they are going to work in a truck as you have to know how your wheels are going to end up fitting in the wheel wells.
A photo of the rear with all of the brackets and what not on it might help id it. Here is a link to a chart that a lot of us check for rear axle width comparison and it may help you figure out what you have. I'm thinking it may be a 73/77 Chevelle size axle though but I may be way off. http://www.carnut.com/specs/rear.html

Re: Rear axle idenification ?
_Ogre,
I think it maybe a chevelle, I will be installing the axle on the bottom of the spring to bring it lower. I built the camaro front clip inside the frame rail of the truck see the picture attached.I may need to drop spindles on the front. I wont know until I get the engine in. -Larry |

Re: Rear axle idenification ?
mr48chev,
On your web site link I measured my axle it measures 60" outside. I found on the web site under Chevy 60.00 1955-1964 Chevy Car 60.00 1967-1969 Camaro I also found a corvette with the same axle size, but I don't think its a corvette. I will keep checking to see what rear axle it is I need to know for parts some day. Thanks for the post guys. -Larry |
