New to the forum, just hauled a '62 c10 fleetside home.

Hey all bought a '62 c10 long-bed fleetside and hauled it home on my trailer.
Last time on the road was 2005. Previous owner(s) replaced the floor pans, installed a 1978 chevy front end 5 lug disc, a 10 bolt rear end, a 307 Oldsmobile with a 200R4 auto tranny.
I do not think the truck has run since these mods. Truck is very straight and has little rust. Back end of frame coated with POR15. The hot rod shop I bought it from was going to use it as a shop truck but ran out of space.

What do you think about the drive train? I know 350's are relatively cheap and 700R4 would be my choice of a trans. But I like different..:0

As well the box looks to be lower than the cab. I assume some rubber mounts are missing under the box or did someone shave them a little?

Thanks in Advance

Welcome aboard and sweet 62! I think a 700r4 would be the better choice.

welcome--if done correct leave the drivetrain as is. their is nothing with a 2004R trans. plenty strong for a 307. ran one in my 65 elco with a built 350.

The 200 is a better OD trans than a 700 IMO, the 307 will work until you get her on the road and drive able/safe. Enjoy!!

Oh and welcome!!

Re: New to the forum, just hauled a '62 c10 fleetside home.

nice truck.! (diamond in the rough)
for starters I would pitch the olds motor.
I'm afraid it will distract you from the love that truck is needed.
Old 307 aftermarket parts are spendy/rare and you wont be happy with the mileage or preformance
sure you could make it run but why ?...
Two words.... Boat Anchor
so if it scabed with a 70's front member does that mean the torsion bars are gone.?
(would like a picture of that)

Re: New to the forum, just hauled a '62 c10 fleetside home.

Welcome to the forum

I have heard that there were thin rubber pads between the bed cross sills and the frame mounts, but I have never seen them.

What are your plans for the '62?

Re: New to the forum, just hauled a '62 c10 fleetside home.

Truck has a 1978 chev 5 on 5 front cross member and coil springs. No torsion bars. Disc's on the front. Appears to be a 10 bolt rear end as well. Also has power steering box that appears to be stock? I cleaned out the cab and found another power steering pump with hoses....maybe the stock one. Also found patch panels for the lower fenders left and right...

Olds motor and tranny have not been run in this truck...transmission cross member mount is new as I found it in the cab...engine and transmission is out of a 1985 Olds wagon..

That is a "G" body rear end. Usually out of a malibu, el camino etc. nothing different except the ears off the stump and maybe the width.

Re: New to the forum, just hauled a '62 c10 fleetside home.

Not much rust so far...
I will pull the engine and rebuild the front end. Control arm bushings look rotted. Most of the boots on the tie rods are torn...frame needs a cleanup.
New balljoints etc.

Probably install a 5.3 or 4.8 depending on budget...and a 700r4.
Anyone made their own stand alone harness for the newer chevy's? Lots of info on Lt1swap.com
