DIY: Center console install
I see this question asked often on the boards. Thought I would pass along a discovery I made when installing my center console this week.
What you need: OEM console from a Suburban/pickup, the rear bracket and the 6 screws to hold it down. You also need a drill with a 3/16" bit and a 10mm socket. At first I thought I would have to make measurements to install the suburban console. Not so. GM provided divets in the floor pan to drill the holes. I lined up my console and the divets lined up. Awesome! Drill a couple 3/16" holes here. For the rear holes, you need the bracket from the donor truck. The rear divets are less obvious, I used a sharpie to highlight them. The little silver dots in the middle. drill these out as well. Install bracket. and then install console. This was to install a 1989 console in a 1986 truck. Different years of console and truck may vary. |

Re: DIY: Center console install
Another tip...low hump floors don't need any bracketry, bolt the console directly to the floor.
I found out about the dimples AFTER I installed the console in my old '73. I ended up being about 1/4" off...bugged the hell out of me.

Re: DIY: Center console install
Like aftermarket OEM console? Or just an aftermarket console?

Re: DIY: Center console install
I did this install also..Console shakes a lot at highway speeds. Any suggestions to calm it down a little...Besides ditching my 16 year old tires.

Re: DIY: Center console install
I used the dimples to align the holes but I put 4 inch spacers between the floor and the console . It makes it more comfortable to rest your arm on .

You may want to change those tires......despite the tread that may left.

Re: DIY: Center console install
I put 1990 Suburban buckets and console in my 86....the console top is even with the bottom seat tops and the seats have built-in armrests so that's where I rest my arm. I used the console bracket on my low hump 2WD floor. It all looks factory which was what I was aiming for-I don't care for the LMC consoles.
