But I think I have fixed my gas gauge. It's had the 3:00 blues for several years now. I had a sender that tested good, and I figured it would be easy to switch them out. Not. I got the old sender out without incident, and the new old one in no problem. But when I went to hook up the gas line, they were different sizes of tubing. Maybe it's a 6 cyl/8cyl thing, or maybe a big block/small block thing, or maybe even a luck of the frikkin' draw thing, but no way it was going to work.

The one on the left came out of my truck, (original 6 cyl) and the one on the right, pulled from some long forgotten donor, is clearly larger:


So I pondered on this for a while and decided that I had to remove the float assy from the good one and intall it one the one that came out of my truck. I carefully cut them apart:


I thought about tack welding it back together, but decided that if I could find a couple small hose clamps that would be easier than dragging out the welder:


While I was at it, I stuck on a new pick-up sock. I know it looks bad, but it can't come off:


After all this, I reinstalled the whole scene and my gas gauge went to 3/8s of a tank

Actually, I thought I had more than that, but we'll see next time I fill 'er up.

good luck! the guage in my rig is accurate to within a 1/2 tank

The gas gauge never worked in my old 64 GMC shop truck... Every other day I would just take the gas cap off and shake the truck and listen to the gas splashing around. If it needed it I would stop and put $20 in. It had a 455 Pontiac out of an older Trans-Am and it didn't miss too many gas stations...

My gauge is way out of whack! So I use plan B. Crude but effective.
