Timing nightmare
Hey guys. I am in the process of installing my MSD Atomic EFI. Before I do that I needed to install an Edelbrock 7164 intake because my stock cast iron intake would not work.
The truck ran perfect with the old intake. I made sure it was TDC then removed the distributor and switch out the intakes When I installed the new 7164 intake I made sure number 1 pointed towards the number one cylinder and then proceeded to finish the installed. The truck started right up but it does not idle. I timed the initial timing to 8 degrees adv but it idles at around 1000rpm and when I put it in drive it dies out. I can advance the timing but it idles faster. Does anyone have any pointers?

Re: Timing nightmare
it sounds like you have a large vacuum leak, since the Edlebrock 7164 intake is for an oval port big block, does the engine you put it on have oval port or square port heads?
and did you make sure the intake gaskets were for oval port? |

Re: Timing nightmare
Yah. Everything is oval port. The intake, closed chamber heads, and gaskets. The intakes was torque to 25ft lbs like in the instructions. If it 00sonde like an exhaust leak I noticed the th400 modulator line had a worn hose. Maybe that is it.

Re: Timing nightmare
I did not do anything on the truck in the last few days. I here is an assumption. On the old cast iron intake I used this for carb gaskets. I used a carb gasket, then a thin metail heat plate, and then a thicker 1/4" gasket before mounting the carb. The reason for is because the cast iron intake would get so hot. Now on the aluminum intake would I need all those gaskets or just the thicker 1/4" gasket?

Re: Timing nightmare
It was multiple vacuum leaks. The base gasket was bad and then the modulator hose for the th400 was split very badly. Long story short the truck is running great. I went put some gas in then when I got home the radiator sprung a pin hole leak.
So it begins again...
