fuel qauge reading wrong

I have always had a problem with my fuel qauge on my 67 c10. When the tank is empty it shows 1/2 tank on the gauge when i fill her up she shoots past the full mark. If i ground the wire that goes to the fuel sending unit thea gauage reads half a tank when it should read empty. I replaced the fuel sending unit but that did not fix the issue. Im out of ideas.

Sounds like the gauge itself. See this recent post.

Re: fuel qauge reading wrong

From what you describe, it sound like the needle on the fuel gauge was removed and installed in the incorrect position. Has the cluster been restored or the needle painted? They are removable but it is very difficult to get them back in the correct position.

If you need a good used fuel gauge, let me know.

Keep us posted.

i have never removed the qauge or cluster but might have to pull it off to see how hard it is to move to the right position

Let me know if you need anymore help. The needle will come off by pulling it straight up. Try not to spin the needle shaft around more than you have to.
