A true survivor for sale
This is not mine and I have only seen it once but it is a true survivor. One of you purist's should pick it up. He said it was original, unrestored....

Odd. Maybe a rare option by GMC. Let's ask our fellow GMC nuts on here.

Re: A true survivor for sale
There were some auxiliary transmissions, but I'm not familiar with the applications.....that truck does have the rare "power brake" pedal. Very hard to find.

Re: A true survivor for sale
I have a friend in Colorado that has the twin stick option in a Suburban, it was dealer installed and is mounted in front of the trans. It is an overdrive unit made in Texas, I forget the brand.

Re: A true survivor for sale
I have heard of one other truck that had what appeared to be an original Aux. Trans, but it was a 3-Speed "Brownie". I never heard of a 2-Speed Aux. Trans in any GM truck. Probably an aftermarket and possibly Dealer Installed as mentioned above, but I guess anything is possible. Real interesting truck though. Pretty nice condition too.

Re: A true survivor for sale
looks like it has a OD box in front of the trans (see how far back the main shifter is) i would say the rear end may have been changed? 411s? it has had a camper on its back most of its life for sure..... price is not bad at all for what it is

Re: A true survivor for sale
Just for reference...I believe this is the shift knob for the 2 speed rear end. If I'm wrong please let me know so I can correct the post.

Re: A true survivor for sale
Never seen one like that. Looks like an old Roadranger shift knob. I've only ever seen two speed rear ends that shifted via an up/down switch strapped to the shift lever.

Re: A true survivor for sale
That knob is too cool, correct or not. I've never seen one like it before. These are the details that make me stick around here so much.

Re: A true survivor for sale
I think that's for a truck with an electrically shifted 2-speed rear instead of vacuum shift, isn't it? At any rate, the two speed rear is a "big truck" thing.
I agree that it looks like an overdrive auxiliary trans/gear splitter in front of the main SM420; probably an Advance Adapters Ranger OD or something that someone added. I think one of them would be pretty neat to have. |

Re: A true survivor for sale
IIRC the old two speed rear ends we had in the late 60's early 70's trucks had more or less a choke type cable you pulled up on to put into high. I remember because you could palm the shift knob and use two fingers to pull up on the two speed

Re: A true survivor for sale
My take, looks like a well preserved truck that the owner took pride in. Probably used as a camper hauler for many years. Price is a bargin for what you are getting. Has super straight body, original upholstery, clean dash, and interior. Look at all the work it DOESN'T NEED! Thousands more can be spent on a poorer example and still not be of this trucks caliber. Biggest turn off, original wheels were swapped out modern 16" one piece wheels, draw back: wrong hubcaps were installed, which IMO, takes away from the original factory look. The "two stick" is probably a period aftermarket auxilary "WATSON" box that runs behind the main box via short drive shaft. This is the small box, not the huge old big rig type, that gives you just direct and overdrive postions. Simple, but effective.

Re: A true survivor for sale
Yeah, I think the knob with the switch is probably for something later with the electric shift rear. AFAIK most of the 60's-early 70's 2 ton trucks were vacuum shift, right?

Re: A true survivor for sale
The 4 speed is in the same location, the bucket seat vs. the bench seat gives the illusion of a different location. The auxiliary stick is attached to linkage rods that run back to auxiliary box. The overdrive box was popular aftermarket item in the 60's on 1 ton trucks being used as campers. Those 5.13 ratios love to peg those tachs.

Re: A true survivor for sale
The main shifter definitely looks much closer to the bench than my SM420 equipped trucks.

Re: A true survivor for sale
That's what I remember but I was kinda young, around 15 and would drive them from the field to the front and back into the field and only worked on it once.

Re: A true survivor for sale
All this talk of auxiliary transmissions is reminding me how neat I think it would be to put a 4-53T Detroit+Ranger OD+SM420 combo in my DD C30! I think I need to start looking for an old 4-53...

Not real sure which one was more popular, but in my opinion, most 2-Speed Rear Trucks were Electric Shift. Most were a Red "Pull Up Button" attached to the shifter handle a little below the shift knob. Bill
