Installing Locar floor shifter? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I pulled the old carpet out of the cab expecting to find a bolt on section of the cab over the transmission that could be removed. Just my luck the center section is not bolted on.
My plan is the Locar shifter directly mounted to a 700r4 trans. Obviously I have to cut the opening in the floor. Do any of you have suggestions on the best way to do this? Thx

When I did my manual speed to the floor, I used my dremel tool (and a few discs). At the time I didn't have a bigger cutoff tool, but even now I think I would use the dremel for the better control of the cut.

I use a Dremel tool for almost all of my cutting, even on solid steel up to 1/4" thick. But instead of the little "break easy" discs, I use these EZ Lock style with a locking hub in the middle that looks like the Batman emblem. I mostly use the "THIN CUT" versions rather than the ones marked METAL. They are about half as thick and really make precise cuts.

The hub will tear out if too much deflection is introduced, but they never fly apart. They just spin around the hub when broken, making for a simple change to a new cutting wheel.

When I did my lokar in the 66 I used a 4 1/2" hole saw. Drilled a small hole in the floor that I thought was close and went under the truck and checked to see where it was and adjusted the new center for the 4 1/2" hole off of that. Worked like a charm.

I like the hole saw idea! I will give that a shot. I would love to find the portion of the cab floor that is normally bolted on so I could cut in the normal opening and have a removable cover. I have been looking at LMC and other sites but I have had no luck. Any idea where I might be able to pick something like this up?

You'll need to find a 60-63 cab to get a bolt in trans cover.

The only removeable floor center or "hump" is for the 4 spd and will be a high hump. The automatics and 3 speed humps are not normally removable, from what I've seen.

Would the factory hole in the four speed bolt-in cover be in the correct place for that trans?

Not to be argumentative just clarifying. I have a 62 with a small hump that bolts in and I have seen a gmc at the junk yard with one also. It really messed me up when I ordered a carpet from Brothers trucks and there catalog said that only high humps bolt in. I did not know what a high hump looked like so I ordered carpet for a high hump. Big mistake.
