Unhappy Engine install, 305 or 350?

My truck's engine has a double tick in the #2 piston. So I finally have the cash to rebuild it, thanks to the holiday pay. Now to my disappointment, the engine casting # is GM 355909. I checked it out in this site: http://www.mortec.com/castnum.htm. According to the site this engine is a 305.
All along I thought it was a 350. Now what do you guys recommend. Should I stay with the 305 or switch to a 350? I will be using this truck as my daily driver. 45 miles one direction to work, I don't want to spend all my money on gas. That’s why I will not install a BB. My truck is a 72 Chevy short step side, 400 automatic tranny.

We don't rebuild 305 engines, since rebuilding a 350 is so much cheaper. 305's are good engines and if you are concerned about gas mileage, you might find a good one pretty cheap or a good 307 pretty cheap.

Just my thoughts.

Go ahead and put in a 350. Sell the 305 and take that money and buy a 350. Your gas mileage will depend on how you build it.

One more question. Are all the parts interchangeable from the 305 to the 350 engine? For example the intake manifold, exhaust manifolds, harmonic balancer, oil pan, and timing chain cover.

Yes they will work I would get a 350 balancer though everything else is good to go

305s use same crank as 350 so you can use the inerts in a 350 block w 350 pistons

Motor only:
6.44 1/8 @ 104.13
10.39 1/4 @ 125.83

Nitrous Times:
5.785 1/8 @ 118.65 with a 1.336 60ft
9.168 1/4 @ 142.58 with a 250 shot dead out of the hole!

I am re-building the 305 in my half ton. I like 20 miles per gallon. It cost me 2 and change for the full re-build kit. The good thing about a 305 is that if it was taken care of you can just hone it and throw in all new standard bearings and be good to go. Try that with a 350 that has had the wee revved out of it for the last 20 or so years. My 305 has 150,000 on it and there isn't even a trace of a ridge at the top of the cylinder.

Oh and by the way the 350 is in the C30.

Actually 305 and 350's have different cranks....stroke is the same, but from what i understand, they are balanced much different (305's have light pistons, 350's have heavy pistons).

305's aren't bad motors....they are good reliable engiens that will go for a long time and get decent MPG, but they are weak in the power department (although a friend of mine had a carb converted TBI 305 in a '76 C10 and it ran suprisingly good).

I would much rather have a 350 myself....cheaper to rebuild, and more power!

same casting numbers on the crank balancing holes are slightly deeper but wont really affect anything as long as the proper width rods are used Ive got a 350 i just built that has a crank and rods out of a boat 305 X rods and the 3932442 crank i didnt get this motor balanced and it doest vibrate at all .

I'm in the same boat. I thought my motor was a 350 also. When I ran the casting #'s I found out it was a 305. It's a good thing a rod started knocking in it. Now I can put a real motor in it. 350 alll the way!!! Anyone want to buy a 305??

UMM NO. All that would be is a 305

305 uses a 3.740 bore with a 3.48 stroke

350 uses a 4.00 bore with a 3.48 stroke

327 uses a 4.00 bore with a 3.25 stroke here is some info on stroke and bore size for sbc

Great, I found a person that wants to get rid of 1971 complete 350 engine. I hope that I will get it this Friday.
As soon as I get the 350 engine I will be donating the 305.
