Back in the 60's many emergency vehicles had that type of phone installed. In more rural areas especially where radio communication was limited due to terrain. This is where the term "mobile phone" was coined. Those mobile units had a special "mobile operator" that placed calls for user. While the user didnt dial directly so the "rotary numbers" were not needed, frequently they just used a standard phone as the handset while all the work was done by that box behind the seat. If you ever watch old TV shows, take a look at "Ironside". He frequently uses one in the back of the paddy wagon. Also the movie "Hell Fighters" with John Wayne, they use one in their cars in that movie. |

Re: Did someone call an Ambulence ?
That big box looks like a power supply for a Motorola 2 way radio. I installed a few of those in trucks back in the 1970's.
