difference between 2wd & 4wd steering box
I just bought a steering gear from a board member and i want to be sure i got the correct one. what is the difference between a 2wd power and 4wd power seering gear? i need a 2wd gear and the one i was sent looks identical and has the same cast # on housing as the one in my 4wd jimmy. before i contact him i wanted to run it by you guys.

Re: difference between 2wd & 4wd steering box
2wd would be the same as on the C10 trucks...pitman arm is parallel to the frame... 4x4 is heavier bigger dia. shaft ...pitman arm is 90 deg. to frame....photo is 72 blazer 4x4. hope that makes sense....Ed.

Re: difference between 2wd & 4wd steering box
thanks notsolo. I compaired the one i bought ( came off a 71 c10) with the one on my 4wd jimmy and they are the same. only thing is i have a 2wd pitman arm and in fits on the shaft at the correct position. so i wonder if its just the shaft size thats different. if anyone else has both 2wd and 4wd that can compare the two and give imput that would be great.

The difference is the sector shaft, I've swapped them out before

Re: difference between 2wd & 4wd steering box
Two wheel drive box sector shaft has threads on it for the big nut that holds the pitman arm on. 4 Wheel drive box has a groove in one side of the splines for clearance of the pinch bolt. This is by far easiest way to tell 2x4 box and 4x4 box apart.

Re: difference between 2wd & 4wd steering box
the steering box on my 85 4x4 went out (leaking like a crazy) i have a 85 2wd steering box after looking up both parts through part stores they look identical and the only difference is the steering ratio and 10 dollars in price but i want to put the 2wd one on since i have it already and its free but will it bolt up and if so how will the turning ratio be, maybe a closer quick turn ratio compared to the 4x4 one? what are the pros and cons of switching since i see some of y'all have done the switch
