Removing the oil filter?

Is it possible to remove the oil filter without spilling oil all over? I am trying to get my newly bent fuel line on and I think the filter is in the way.

I have a 250 I6.

THANKS!

Re: Removing the oil filter?

I removed the oil filter and the new fuel line slid right into place, no sweat. It isn't a perfect fit but it was the best I could do in the wee hours. I am going to try and finish up the install tomorrow then get the filter back on.

No oil at all dripped out. Worst thing was I couldn't find my filter wrench and I had to get a new one.

If you do not need to save the filter poke a hole in the center of the bottom with a Phillips screwdriver or ice pick and let it drain into a pan and then remove it. That's how I do my oil changes. Keeps from making a mess.

Look at the bright side....now you have two wrenches when you stumble across you old one

Oh ya, I was thinking that! I saved my receipt, I'll take the new one back if I find the old one.

Really ? You'd take back a tool that you used ?

Re: Removing the oil filter?

Used once hardly says "damaged" to me.

Haven't found the old wrench yet though.....I probably won't until the big garage renovation.

The filter is fine and actually new. I put it aside and as soon as I am finished with the fuel lines I'll put it back on. I think I have (in my head) solved all of the fuel line problems and I think I can finish up this part of the project by next week. After that, things should progress quickly.

Taking back a tool that you used is wrong. It's not any different than buying an article of clothing and wearing it to a wedding, funeral, job interview or whatever, then returning it. Or buying a TV and watching the big game on it then returning it.

Wrong is wrong.

Or eating a burger and then returning it...

Wait, I guess that might be a little worse.

Seriously, though, it really bums me out when I buy something "new" and find someone else's greasy paw prints on it, whether it's a part or a tool or anything else.

And one more thought: If you need a filter wrench, you're probably cranking the filters down too tight when you install them. The gasket should be lightly oiled, and you turn it 3/4 turn after it makes contact with the base. I've never needed a filter wrench on a filter I installed, and I've never had one leak on me.

It's good to see men of such high standards online.....no really!

And now for the rest of the story. The store gave my plan of "if found then bring back" their blessing as I was quite upfront with the employees concerning my intentions.
