Lightbulb Dash Light Issue

My dash lights have finally stopped working properly after about a couple of weeks of it flickering between one set of dash lights to another set of dash lights. It looks like it switches to a different key mode but not sure. The blinker lights light up and stay solid the battery light is on and the check gauges light is on as well.

What is going on is that my dash lights that light up the gauges stopped working and so did the fuel, temp, battery, and a couple other gauges stopped working when the lights went out but when I flick the dim switch to the lowest dimmer setting my gauges all work again or if I turn off the lights same thing but that means my dash lights are completely out though. Any ideas?

Speedo works, exterior lights work.

I checked the fuses and have taken the switches out so far but I'm just an amateur and not sure if there is something wrong with them.

P.S. I believe this is a side issue but I thought I would mention it as well. I have the wiper switch spraying on my windshield when I just want to wipe not wipe and spray!

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks!

The year model will help identifying your wiper fix, since there's 2 different style wiper motor/ circuit boards.

Re: Dash Light Issue

It sounds like a poor connection.

The ground is at the bottom edge of the dash by the ALDL connector on many years of trucks.

If it is a 1988, 1989 or early 1990 with “moon” style gauges they have a common problem of poor connections where the instrument panel plugs onto the harness connector. If so, do not get to aggressive when cleaning the circuits that the connector terminals come in contact with.

Welcome to the board!

Re: Dash Light Issue

Ok thanks,
So you are saying that the dash cluster needs to come out carefully and the plugs need to be cleaned behind the speedo etc?

Re: Dash Light Issue

Looks like I got it fixed. Don't know exactly what I did but I took the dash console out and cleaned it a little and check all the dash bulbs out to see if they work a couple didn't but cleaned everything and put it back on and looks good from what i can see so far... it's still daytime but if you hear back from me you'll know it wasn't fixed.

Re: Dash Light Issue

Glad you got it working!

1993 trucks did not have as big of a problem with losing connection as the earlier dash but the problem with those connections is wide spread.

On your 1993 the dash ground is a wire next to the ALDL (the computer test port) as stated in my earlier post. It would be a good idea to make sure it is tight.

If you find you need to clean the contacts again, a good method to clean the contact area is to use a pencil eraser.
