chrome around rear window removal

Got my hands on a rear sliding window for my 1970 c20 (due to the generosity of a forum member). I am wondering how to go about removing the chrome trim around the existing window without damaging it. Is there a special tool I need?

Also, will I be able to reuse that chrome trim with the slider?

You should be able to take the trim out with the window and gasket, then it will come apart easily. You should be able to push it out from the inside. I found the best tool was a cotter key puller or something else with a hook on the end. Use the tool to work the gasket loose while tapping on the glass. Start at the top, be patient and it should come out of there without a problem.

My truck has a slider and I noticed the other day that the gasket is made for trim but there is none there. Don't know if someone got lazy or if the slider was just a little bigger and the trim would not fit.

Thanks, thats just the kind of info I need. I would have started by taking the chrome off first. This forum is such a valuable resource.

Just to clarify; remove the old rubber trim and glass as a unit using the tool above. My 72 had a slider with trim in the rubber. I used a stock glass after the truck was painted. I didn't like the look of the slider.

The slider window goes in exactly like the plain glass, so yes you can use the stainless trim in the rubber seal with the groove.

Check with your local auto glass company to buy a "GLASS TOOL " they are made of a composite material and about 8 inches in length being composite it won't scratch your paint if you slip while working the rubber gasket out or back in ...Could save some paint touch up work for the few dollars they cost ! Brake spring tools are for brakes ...

I got the window out, chrome and gasket intact. It was more difficult than I expected. I got the top drivers side area where it curves to come out first and then moved along the top and pushed out to remove the window. But first i pushed a rope down into the gasket from the inside of the truck. So the top comes out first starting on the curve at the drivers side. Took help from my son also pulling. For me it was a two man job.

now I have to get the slider in, but that will have to wait until tomorrow.
