what a spot to put a rustproof plug

went to look at a tailgate and found this beautiful take off gate with a rustproof plug on the out side surface of the gate. no way I could pass it up no dents and original paint I have never seen anyone put a rustproof hole on the outside of a car or truck body
the guy i bought it from thought it was a hole for a lock

Re: what a spot to put a rustproof plug

Back in the day we used Ziebart rustproofing in all our trucks and cars , they would drill holes in all the door frames, under the trunk and hood into the boxed frames and spray rustproofing (think fine spray not heavy rubberized ) and the spray would seep into all the creases and it really worked well when done correctly .Once sprayed they would close the access holes with plastic plugs . Never seen one on the outside of any truck ? could have been a "new employees" FIRST DAY ? At least it looks centered !

So I guess the rust proof plug and the Ziebart won't help the Patina crowd

In door jambs and so on yeah... but in the middle of the tailgate? Was he drunk?

Can't help but wonder if its there for some more sensible reason. If you wanted to shoot it into the tailgate a hole on each end would have worked.

Re: what a spot to put a rustproof plug

My old man punched about a dozen holes on the inside AND the outsides of the bed sides on the 72' I am now working on. Yes it worked great to spray oil to prevent rust in the salt belt. But they are not close to uniform spacing and are 1/2" in diameter. Trust me I feel your pain. Thank god for welders.
