Cutting carpet for gas pedal, 1968

I installed carpet in my 1968 3/4 ton today and all is fine except for the gas pedal. I need to cut a hole in the carpet and I am looking for a little advice.

Anyone done this and can post picture of exactly where they cut?

Will the pedal snap back onto the stubs with the carpet in place?

Or did you remove the stubs and screw them through the carpet?


I have read about installing the newer, hanging style gas pedal and I do not want to do this to my very original truck.

I just cut a small "X" over the studs,then pushed the carpet down around them. Then I snapped the pedal in place.It takes a little pressure to do it,but worked fine for me.

teach me too I now have 2 nub sticking out of the carpet but the peddle won't stay on ......and yes I cut the backer off tto??

Did your carpet have the plastic/rubber heel pad in the carpet? If so did you cut through it to get to the stubs?

I think I am going to wait a day or two for the carpet to set into place before I make the cut.

It's been awhile back,but I think I did cut through the rubber, too.

Last fall I cut the carpet and snapped the gas pedal into place, but now it will not stay snapped on.

Any suggestions?

Lay the carpet in, let it rest for a day or so, then push on the carpet where the studs are located and cut a couple of X slits for the studs to push through. I usualy fine tune the cuts with an exacto knife. You can roll the carpet back and clear away some of the jute to aid in pedel retention. Usualy clearing the jute pad from the rear of the carpet will work and alow you to snap the pedel on the studs and have the pedel stay put. However as you can see in an above post, not always. The pedel you purchased will have bearing on it also. The plastic waffle pedels seem to hold better than the deluxe hard rubber pedels. I think it has more to do with the pedel than anything else. Old thread revival!

There are two ball studs on the floor. Pull up. If it doesn't pop off easily, use a flat screwdriver under the middle section and pry up.
