How To Step Notch?

Hi guys,

New here, awesome forum,

been reading about notches and ive been wondering how to line up the notches and make sure everything is square. What are the steps to welding in Step notches?

I always get my frame in the air and level before welding on it. That way I know everything is straight and level (and if I screw up its easier to catch).

Clamp the insides and outsides on first. Make sure they are level then weld the insides and outsides in. Then weld on the top. Cut the frame out and weld in the bottom.

I prefer outside corner joints with welding so you can make sure you are burning in nicely. Keep that in mind when clamping everything together.

Ok thanks for the Advice,
1. imma get her on level ground
2.Once Jacked up make sure the frame is level
3.Mount the outside notches, make sure there level
4. Making Sure the notches are centered to the axle
5. Clean up the metal and Start welding?

You can mount the inside and outside notches at the same time. Just use a long level across the top. Also make sure your notches are level front to back (especially if you are doing a bedfloor over the top of them).

I clean everything before and use weldable primer on everything that I cant paint later.

I would offset the notch forward a little because the axle will swing forward as the truck goes down. You don't want it hitting the front of your notch

Soo whats a good 5 lug rearend? Yukon? 1500? Tahoe? Impala SS? suburban? Has Anyone used these present rear ends?

I would suggest using the factory rear end and getting some 5-lug conversion axles from Moser. The earlier 6-lug rear ends were narrower, so makes for a deeper wheel.

Its a c20 3/4 ton 8 lug, does Moser make the conversion? i was thinking for brakes and a set of rollers just find a rear end on craigslist, pickapart, or something?

Moser can make almost any axle you need, just need the specs, and they will build it for you. I don't see why making the 5-lug axle for the 8-lug rear would be an issue. We are a dealer if you need any help. Looks like a great project.

hmmm i was told by earlyclassic, Swapping the 3/4 ton rear end out for a 71 or later 1/2 ton rear end is about the only option. but you can swap the 6 lug for 5 lug all day long, i think something about the lenghts of the rear end?

I'm running the rear end out of a 71/72 c10, with the Moser 5lug converted axles.

8 lug is different and has the large hubs. If you want 5 lug you can do new hubs ($400) and then convert the brakes etc. I would get a 5 lug out of a similar year and swap them out.

Looks like he has a eaton rear end in it.Like said find you a bolt in 12 bolt if you can.

Rock the 8 lug that's what I'm doing. Detroit steel wheel may be making 20" smoothies in the near future for the 8 lug.
