Hub or front end issue?
I broke my drive shaft last year and had to drive the truck home on the front wheels in 2 hi. About half way home it started acting like it was popping the TC out of gear.
Today I finally got to drive it again, I took it around the neighborhood in 4 Lo and it started popping again, occasionally acting like it was in neutral for a 1/2 a second. I pulled it in my hard and felt a small pop then nothing, I could see thought he floor the front driveshaft was still spinning but not moving the truck in 4hi or 4lo. I unlocked the hubs, locked the hubs back and hopped back in the truck and it started moving again. Anyone have a wild guess where my issue might be? I'm thinking something with the hubs. |

Re: Hub or front end issue?
Surprising. I thought Warn hubs were nearly indestructible.

Re: Hub or front end issue?
why are you driving it in 4lo on pavement? that will break something. It binds everything up.
you probably need to take your hubs apart and make sure nothing is broke, or needs to be cleaned and regreased. they do need maintenance from time to time.

Re: Hub or front end issue?
Probably stretched out the TC chain and its starting to jump a tooth at times. The front axle drive is designed to assist the rear drive axle. Now that your driving a front wheel drive truck, all the weight and torque is going to be too much for the chain to handle over the long haul.

Re: Hub or front end issue?
That is interesting. I was thinking it was the chain too. I'd pull the front cover and check the ring & pinion and make sure there's no broken teeth.

Re: Hub or front end issue?
Also take a look at the slip joint on the front driveshaft. I also thought chain, but the spline connection on the slip joint may be worn. (for that matter, in a 30yr old truck, it all may be worn.)
Just for giggles, what are you working on?

Re: Hub or front end issue?
more than likely you just need to clean and regrease the hubs. they are either sticking, or have some broken parts that are hanging up.

Re: Hub or front end issue?
Hubs first, then other stuff. Odds are just what v30crew mentioned. Grease on my '73, had started to dry, hub operation was sketchy. Clean and re grease and all was good.
Fathers' 84 stripped out the front driveshaft slip joint.
