Differential Filler Help Needed - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

The filler plug on my differential is shot. The head is rounded off and the plug is stuck. Unfortunately I drained the fluid and replaced the gasket before I checked the plug. If I pour the fluid down the vent tube, which is clear as far as I can tell, will it fill the diff? This will only be a temporary solution until I can get a cover with a fill plug, but I need my truck running tomorrow.

I would go and get a new cover right now! If you over fill it, the diff will just puke lube all over your driveway but if it is under filled you will need to get it overhauled...that's big bucks vs the $40.00 or so a new cover will cost.

If you have a welder, get a big nut that will fit over the plug and weld the top of the nut to the plug then you can get a wrench on it and it should come out.

Have you tried a hammer & chisel. I have gotten them off that way. If you keep catching the edge & hammer at it it eventually turns. If you get the flange completely broke off it usually comes on out.

I have called all of the local auto stores and no one has one with a cover with fill tube, and they cost way more than $40 if they have one. I have tried lots of heat and lube I will try the chisel.
