Wiring Harness?

I am installing all new wires in my truck and was wondering which brand to get, a painless or autowire? I have heard good things about both and they are comparable on price. I also would like to know if they work with HEI or if I need to make modifications. Thanks for the help.

Re: Wiring Harness?

I like M&H. They will make an HEI harness if you want, also internal regulator if specified. Original style Packard connectors in the right colors and exact lengths as OEM. American-made and the technician who builds the harness puts his own name on his work. Not cheap, but comparable.
Since I never used American Auto Wire or Painless it would be unfair to knock them, but I have had good results from M&H.

M&H almost identical to stock. Installed all my dash wiring with no problems.

Re: Wiring Harness?

Agree with Tom Vogel. Use American Autowire or M&H. You spend a bit more to get the stock style harness with the stock plugs, etc. but the installation will go much easier. I used American Autowire that I got from Classic Industries and everything worked the first time. It was as close to plug and play as you will get.

I used M&H for all my wiring and it is all "plug and play" with the correct factory clips, connectors, retainers and tape. Also the engine harness, and front light harness included the factory style plastic wire channels. Good quality stuff.

I got mine from Wes at Classic Heartbeat (site sponsor).

Re: Wiring Harness?

Just finished mine. Get the american auto wire kit. Plenty of wiring, you get the dimmer switch, headlight switch, ignition switch, key. Real nice easy to read instructions. Very happy.

Re: Wiring Harness?

Hi Casey, mind if I ask how long it took you to install the kit? Did you replace all the harnesses? Thanks

Yes, I purchased the american auto wire kit and replaced the entire harness. It was my first time rewiring an entire truck, and I must say it was very easy. Everything worked on the first try which astonished myself. As far as time? Couldn't really say, I know I could do it quicker a second time around. I really just took my time so I didn't have to redo anything. Just study the directions before starting and compare them to all the connectors, etc. It was actualy enjoyable and learned alot during the process. I would say it could easily be done over a long weekend. The kit came with everything needed. I think the only thing I had to purchase was the main ground strap and positive lead from the battery and a cigarette lighter, glove box light and dome light, which just because of cosmetic reasons. I do recommend purchasing new light sockets for frt turn signals, back up lights and brake lights. Just to make sure every thing is fresh. Mine were pretty nasty. The kit comes with the side marker sockets. The american auto wire kit, comes with plenty of options too. Third brake light, electric fan, different style columns, aftermarket gauges, etc. I stayed mainly stock, so I didn'y need them, but nice to know I have options down the road that are there if needed. It also had plenty of wiring and extra terminals. Anyway, I hope this helped. I know I am rambling.

I see your from Smyrna. I visit the Nissan plant frequently as we (Akebono) supply them with brake calipers. Nice area. I am about 2.5 hours north of you.

Re: Wiring Harness?

Casey, next time you're in town reach out and say hello. We have a hotrod club that meets every Friday night in Murfreesboro, typically a couple hundred cars and trucks show up. Thats only 6-8 miles from the plant. I live about 2 miles from the plant. Thanks for the response, I may tackle updating my harness this fall.
