Re: How many of you guys are running 700r4's
So I got a quote today from a local shop that has a good rep. All said and done $2,300 that is take out old trans, move cross member, build trans w/ upgraded parts, 2400 stall
, shorten drive shaft, all linkage and wiring ex.......... drop of on Monday and get it back road worthy Friday. It sounds high to me. What do you guys think. |

It actually sounds pretty reasonable for a complete turn key job.

Re: How many of you guys are running 700r4's
One of my buddies got a quote to do the same job in his 70 442 last week, and that's what they priced his at. $2,300.

Re: How many of you guys are running 700r4's
Just heard this today but do you have to use a caprice or impala ss tail shaft housing to make the 700r4 work?

Re: How many of you guys are running 700r4's
I doubt that. Just use whatever housing is on it, shorten or lengthen driveshaft accordingly.

Re: How many of you guys are running 700r4's
I used to have one in my 81, but I accidentally burned up the 3 and 4 clutch packs by towing a trailer behind it on the interstate. Until that happened that was the best transmission that I ever owned. My 350C turbo does not even come close.

Re: How many of you guys are running 700r4's
So I got everything ordered yesterday. The trans is being built this week and I will drop of the shift parts and tv made ez when they come in. Then then the truck will be dropped of and the transplant will begin. What end of the drive shaft did you guys shorten? The front half or rear? Or should I go with a single driveshaft ? What are the pros and cons of single drive shaft?

Re: How many of you guys are running 700r4's
In my opinion the BTO one is an awesome product. They have them for most carbs and look nice also. Ask for Jenn if you call them, the girl knows her tranny's and service is top notch , they are an easy install and adjustment.

Re: How many of you guys are running 700r4's
That the one I got. I figured you don't want to get crap when you spend all that money on a built 700r4. Thank you though for the info.

Re: How many of you guys are running 700r4's
Not looking to start a debate, but when I bought my TH350 torque converter from Hughes Performance, they suggested a 200-4R over the 700R4 as a future upgrade. At the time I wasn't interested in spending the money to change to an overdrive transmission because my truck is mainly a weekend driver. If it was a daily driver (or driven more often) I might consider it. For my situation it just doesn't make sense to spend the extra money. Maybe some day though. If/when that day comes, I will seriously look into both transmissions.

Re: How many of you guys are running 700r4's
i will be running one when I start my build.
I paid $300.00 for a tranny out of a 91 caprice with 100,000 miles and still works good. Paid about $700.00 for a good rebuild kit with trans-go shift kit, alto racing cluthes and extra clutch packs. All this will be going behind a 454 with 500hp/500+tq. The rebuild will be done by me as I have access to all the tools and books. Will probably run a ECE cross member for looks and the ease of removing tranny pan. |

Re: How many of you guys are running 700r4's
With that engine consider upgrading the planetary, sonex valve, hardened valve body separator plate, oil pump (Pump definite weak spot)

Re: How many of you guys are running 700r4's
with that lumpy cam your going to need more than 1800 factory stall, even the corvette 2200 stall isn't going to be enough, going to suk if you have to do it twice....
