oil pressure gauge (copper line)

So last nite, after a long cold,nasty, winter, I finally installed my replacement trans. While I was getting it filled with ATF properly, I sat back in the drivers seat to check my temp gauge I noticed my leg felt strangely warm, and wet. When I turned on my int. light i saw that my right leg was soaked in oil along with my shoe and the floorboard. once I saw it was oil (immediately) I shut her down. I knew right away what had happened. So after all the headache of the trans swap. I was in the final steps to try it out, but Nooooooo!, I didn't even get to take it out of park. I'll order it today, the only one I found for a replacement oil press. line is LMC for $20. My question to anyone who can help is; What options do I have to delete this line. I plan on installing a electric gauge, along with others at same time. So can I just buy a elect. sensor and just use that as a plug until I get the new gauges, or should I just bite the bullet and replace the line? Opinions, Suggestions, anyone? thanks John

I would like to know also. I just replaced my wire harness and it has a line for an electric gauge, but my stock cluster is for a oil line gauge.

you can use an electric sensor or just get an 1/8 pipe plug

i'd take a good mechanical gauge any day of the week over an electric gauge

You could get a length of nylon tubing from your local parts house and a couple of ferrels to install it until you put your electric unit in, or, just plug the outlet in the block until you install the new unit. I used to use copper tubing, but the new nylon/plastic tubes that come with the after market gauge sets are far less susceptible to vibration. The biggest issue with these are the ferrels. They want to be snug, but you can't torque down on them like you would a copper flare.

Find the leak and repair it. If it's the gauge which is rare, you may have to replace it. You should be able to go to Home Depot or Lowes and get 1/8 th copper line with the ferrules and new nuts.
There is usually enough line to cut off at the gauge and install a new ferrule and nut if it's leaking at the gauge.
Auto meter sells the whole kit less gauge for $10. You can probably find them at advance or AZ for the same price.

A new electric sender will run $20 or more unless you use the idiot light sender and then it will be more.

Not to hijack this thread but I have a question along these same (oil gauge) lines. I ordered a copper oil gauge line from LMC and it came in the mail with two screw-in brass fittings. The last time I ordered one of these it was for my 81 C10 and it also had these brass screw-in fittings. But I seem to remember them also having two TINY little ring things that also went over the copper tubing on the bottom AFTER the fittings. The new tubing kit has no such tiny rings in it. Any ideas? I am not installing this until I am sure I have all the equipment.

It will either be a flare connection or a compression fitting; the compression fittings get the little ferrule or whatever it's called. I believe that's what my original is (1970 though). Often the compression ferrules are not reusable, but I've had mine off and on 8 times I'm sure and it doesn't leak yet.

So, if its the factory gauge, I -think- you'd nee a line kit with the compression ends. Last AutoGauge mechanical oil pressure gauge I saw was set up like that too, so not sure what your line kit is.

If you have an original gauge and block fitting the correct oil line kit fittings will look like the picture below. All GM cars and trucks of the era with an oil pressure gauge used this fitting. If you try to use a generic oil line kit with ferrules you will ruin the oil pressure gauge and block fitting and it will leak.

The correct kit can be had from most DYI auto stores like NAPA, Car Quest, or marketers for your trucks like Brothers, Classic Heartbeat, GMCPaul’s, etc.

I agree, not much can go wrong with a mechanical gauge. Did you try a local parts store for the line? I got one from my small town NAPA a few years back.

Disagree, this problem is what can go wrong with a mechanical gauge. Never seen an interior covered in oil from an electrical gauge.

Then it appears as if I AM missing a part, just not what I thought. That large brass receiver/adaptor thing was NOT included in my set.

This is the reason I DO NOT have a mechanical guage either. Instead I install a high pressure oil sending unit that will inform me of anything less than 20 psi by way of the big red oil light on the dash. If and engine losses oil pressure beyond that your going to have to tear into it anyhow IMHO.

The factory gauge has no numbers anyhow and aftermarket gauges just are just clutter. I do have a manual gauge I can easily hook up to get an accurate reading if I feel I have an issue. Just my two cents
