Re: trouble with door lock please help

Why don't you take the door panel off so you can see what's going on inside when the key gets turned.

Re: trouble with door lock please help

I'm pretty sure it isn't supposed to do that ever, is this an original or aftermarket mechanism?
If it's aftermarket it's possible you just got a defective mechanism, it happens.
If it's original it's plum worn out, that happens too.

I'm moving this to the main 67-72 message board for you as this doesn't belong in Projects and Builds.

You might reach out to LockDoc on the the forum. Leon is very knowledgeable about all things lock and key.

Re: trouble with door lock please help

A new latch will cure the problem, after forty five years of use there is some wear in the latch.

If you haven't yet, use some PB Blaster or similar penetrating oil on the latch and lock. (not WD-40) If it still doesn't want to cooperate try moving the striker plate on the body out a bit. Be sure and mark around it with a fine felt tip marker first so you can tell how far you have moved it. Only go about 1/16" at a time and don't let it move up or down, just out. It shouldn't take much if that's the problem, which I'm betting it is. 90% of the time when new weatherstripping is installed it will make the door latch bind and the lock won't work correctly because of it.

Re: trouble with door lock please help

40 year old weatherstripping probably wasn't enough force to hold the striker against the latch in such a way as to prevent turning the key. With new weatherstripping, it is.

So likely its a combination of a worn latch and new weatherstripping. I'd do what other suggested above (repair or replace the latch) and move the striker outwards a little, so long as it doesn't mess up your door alignment (door sticking out too far).
