72 chevy c10 fuel ping

I just recently dropped a rebuilt 350 SBC in my 72 chevy and its got about 2500 miles on it. About a week ago I had to replace the stock starter with a high torque starter because it snapped a bolt. Since I didn't have the means to remove the snapped bolt I had to take it to a mechanic, while there he suggested I replace my stock carb since it was in pretty bad shape. I replaced the carb with a edelbrock 1406 600 CFM carb. It pings under load when it is cold, not so bad when warm, and it doesn't always happen. I have searched for a possible vacuum leak, and although I did have one, I fixed it and the ping is still present. I have the timing set a 11 over. The previous owner did a horrible job wiring the extras as he tapped the choke wire directly off of the distributor power wire. Im just trying to figure out what could be causing this issue. Maybe the choke wire shorting on the intake since the connection was poor? Would like some advice from the more knowing if possible. thanks for any help you can provide
