Should i buy this 68 shortbed?

Former owner of a 68 shortbed.
Neighbor may his 68 shortbed for 1500.00

it is all factory:

straight 6 - 3 on the tree
no power anything / no a/c
body is decent
cab is better than good, less than excellent(no rust on quarters or floor or rocker panels)

If I buy, these are the goals:

350
disc front brakes
power brakes/power steering
A/C

My biggest problem will be the a/c - since factory trucks came with built in vents, and I've read the firewalls are different.

Should I keep looking for what i want - mainly a truck with a/c.

I live in Texas and will not survive in these metal ovens during slow summer day traffic.

If you like everything about the truck besides no AC, I'd buy it. Sounds like a good price. They're companies that make AC units for cars and trucks, Vintage Air ect. I'd actually prefer the aftermarket version as they're more compact and have updated equipment ect.

I check out vintage's website. I saw no prices.
Any idea on the price and difficultly factor?

I can fix/replace what breaks on my vehicle pretty easy.
I can read/follow directions pretty easy.
I have not had much experience customizing/modifying vehicles.

when i bought my 68 swb it had everything i wanted but a/c,but i can deal without it.even though i dont know why i wanted a/c i ride my bike all summer

an aftermarket unit will cost about $1k
all the kits are about 800-900-1000-1100 or more depends where and how you get it... then charging and it and such will cost some money

Thanks for the prices that will help in the decision.
I won't make a final decision until i receive my income tax refund.
Until then i'll keep looking for a factory a/c shortbed.

charging the a/c wont be to much i think a complete 134a kit is like 40 bucks or so.you can find it at any local parts store

Wow!! Now thats love for these trucks.
You'd be will to come from WASHINGTON state to TEXAS for the truck while just looking at pictures and my opinion.

NO digital camera here.
I'll try to sneek some pictures of the truck without my neighbor noticing...Don't want him driving the price up!!

It probably take a couple of weeks.
I'll post the pictures asap and my decision when I get my refund.
I'll try and use this thread if it survives.

If i were you i would pass it up and get one with air but send me the phone number of the guy with the truck so i can make arrangements to pick it up. It will be tough doing without ac but i can tuff it out i think, if not Classic Auto Air is a 1/2 hour drive from me.

My truck is the same thing in a sense it's a 67, now with,,,,

The only difference is that it was originally an ac cab and I'm not using air.

I don't need it really because we live up in a tiny little town in NH

Hey, 337, if you do get the truck, why don't you check out Hot Rod Air for the a/c system? They're based out of San Antonio and I bet they'd be happy to help you on your quest for a/c.

Pick up one of the Classic Trucks magazines. All the a/c companies advertise in them. I have not had air in a vehicle since 95, had it from 93-95, been driving since 76. I live in D/FW, don't bother me to roll the windows down and go. I do not want to give up the gas mileage, yes I'm cheap. I can buy some neat stuff for the ridiculous cost of an a/c system.

Hey 337, Hot Rod Air is in Selma which if my memory serves me correctly is just outside Universal City going toward New Braunfels and they do make aftermarket A/C for our years trucks. Here is link http://www.hotrodair.com/ You may want to check them out. That is not a bad price for a Texas truck, that is what I paid for my 67 LWB and I drove over from Tampa to just north of Austin to pick it up. Even if you don't get it you can always add an aftermarket unit to whatever truck you get.

Hey can you send me a couple dozen tamales from San Antonio, I moved here from there, just kiddin but I sure do miss the Riverwalk.

I did some searching.
Hot Rod Air is actually Vintage Air and they are in San An-tone.
They're manufacturing plant is here.

I've see some good post in regards to Vintage Air on this site.
I will definitely pay them a visit.
Hopefully they're open to the public.

I would want to split the driving between this truck and my 93 blazer.
Going to work with yellow stains under your arm-pits ain't cool.

Fifteen Hundred .......Sounds like a great deal. I'm doing a Vintage Air system in my Son's truck this summer. Says he really needs air. I grew up in Tucson Az. and never had air...Geeeeeez...kids these days.....;-)~ That's OK though.....I got notified today that he received a full academic scholarship to UNR or UNLV...That should help pay for his A/C system. I go back to UNR in the spring.....Maybe we can join a fraternity together...lol
