Exclamation The 1960 - 1966 Chevrolet & GMC Pickups Engine and Tranny Swap Thread

The 1960 - 1966 Chevrolet & GMC Pickups Engine & Tranny Swap Thread.

Alright fellas.....

I thought about starting this thread for all the resources on doing engine/tranny swaps. This could be I6 to V8, Different cubic inch V8 swaps, Big Block Swaps, BBV6 Swaps, and Auto/Manual Tranny Swaps. ChiefRocka, scotts62, Alan's Classic this maybe needs to go to the engine and drive train side of the forum so yaw fellas can make that decision. Guys, add all your resources, info, what you did or need to do or done to your truck. What's needed for the swap. Etc...
Year: 1960, 61, 62, 63, 64, 65, and 66.
Post links to previous threads on the subject as well.
This will be a source for all the new and veterans can have one place to go for info on the topic. Have at it fellas!
Hope this helps and is a good idea!

Great idea, it would be nice to have all the required information in one place. The following thread covers a small block Chevy in the 60-62 chassis:

http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=369663

I'm looking forward to the threads that show installing a big block Chevy, 401 Buick, Chrysler Hemi, Oldsmobile, Pontiac, and other interesting engines.

Here's the most common 63/66 engine stands-
Left are the I-6(Not 292)
Center are the V-8
Right are the GMC V-6

I'm swapping the I6 to a 327, the engine has C-shaped mounts on the block already, are the center mounts pictured the only other mounts I need and where can I find them?

Re: The 1960 - 1966 Chevrolet & GMC Pickups Engine and Tranny Swap Thread

I'm not sure what you mean by "C" mounts, unless it's the later "Clamshell"style. If so,they won't work with the stands pictured.
The rubber mounts on your I-6 are the same as needed for a V-8.
But,you should get the new style interlocking type if yours are original. There was a big stink about these seperating back in the late 60's and GM was forced to make a recall and that's when the stop straps(or torque straps) were installed(free by GM dealers) to prevent the engine from lifting due to the mount seperating.
The ones in the following picture are the new design with the interlocking steel to prevent engine lift when it fails.Carefully compare to your old mounts and replace if yours are the bad ones!Note the dent in the top of the new design mount.

You can find the engine stands by watching the for sale ads here.

Re: The 1960 - 1966 Chevrolet & GMC Pickups Engine and Tranny Swap Thread

I have completed the rebuild of my 500 Cadillac engine and plan on dropping it into my 64 stepside this winter, after the holidays. The truck currently has the 230 6 cylinder. This will be my first swap. I've been reading, talking, and gathering as much info as possible as I plan on doing this swap right.

Headed out tue to check out a 02 chevy truck 5.3/4L60 junk yard pull out for my 66 Suburban. It has "only' 100k miles and is supposed to be super clean. I get every thing to do with the engine and trans, wiring harness, fuse box, pcm, air cleaner and tubes, maf, fuel system ect, throttle cables and pedal, trans cable and neutral safety switch.

Re: The 1960 - 1966 Chevrolet & GMC Pickups Engine and Tranny Swap Thread

I "hope" to pull the LT1/4L60E from my Corvette and put them (rebuilt, mild upgrades) into the truck. Of course this means the Vette will need an LS3/T56 to replace it...

While I liked the idea of rebuilding the 327 to 350hp Camaro specs, the LT1 would be a lot more fun and would make room for the LS in the Vette. Win/Win.

Only plans for the LT1 are a mild cam and MSD ignition to replace the OptiSpark OE setup. Right now I am still saving my pennies for my Dropmembers.

Well checked the 5.3 out and it starts and runs fine and trans works. The antifreeze and reservoir are clean, oil and trans fluid are both clean. Its a super clean rust free 02 truck with a clean frame that appears to have been garage kept,(thats the only way they stay that nice here in Illinois) interior is very clean grey cloth seats. Its too bad it was hit in the front and totaled. I pick everything up next week. 1300 dollars for everything

Re: The 1960 - 1966 Chevrolet & GMC Pickups Engine and Tranny Swap Thread

1961 LS (5.3) and NV3500 swap. I used speedway universal motor mounts. I probably went a difficult route but, I wanted the oil pan to be above and behind the crossmember with a truck oil pan and have room to hide my coils behind the motor. I had to build a trans tunnel and cut the firewall. Here is the only picture I have on me at the time. This was a test fit of the motor after the firewall/ trans tunnel modification.
