Fuel pump problem

My neighbor and I just replaced the fuel pump on my 83 dually. Now I'm not getting any gas to the carb. Other than another fuel pump, what could be wrong and how to fix?

is it a elc pump or manual if manual did you get the plunger under the rod

Agree with above, also do you have dual tanks and which tank is selected? Hen the switch fails, it defaults to passenger tank.

I never knew this about the switch defaulting to passenger tank, good to know!

I have recently been having issues with the switch failing and not defaulting to either tank, just kinda in limbo. this has happened to me several times before, unplug the switch from the harness and jump it with a paperclip or a spare fuse to see if you can hear the solenoid under the cab doing its thing. otherwise check your fuses.

assuming you installed it correctly. maybe the line is clogged.

is your fuel filter before or after the pump? either way replace it. always a good idea to replace the pump and filter at the same time.

do you have dual tanks? various components can fail in this system

have you checked the condition of the rubber lines between hard lines? could be dryrotted and letting air in causing a loss of suction. a tell tale sign is the strong smell of fuel.

We just pulled the pump back off and the rod was stuck in the upper position. Removed the upper bolt on the front of the block and got the rod to drop. Need to get the rod up another eighth of an inch to get the pump to seat up against the block. I added some grease to the cavity before we installed the new pump and I wander if I got to much in there. Would the grease around the rod be causing enough suction to keep it from going up the rest of the way?

Fellers, thanks for the other info. If rod doesn't solve the problem, I'll look at some of the other issues.

possible grease would make it hydraulic not a good thing to use

My 73' 's fuel pump blew by the weep hole so I replaced the stock AC/Delco with a replacement from O'Reily AP and then I had problems at operating temps. I then went with an AC/Delco and now have no problems at all when high vacuum is applied. Just my experience. Some times the oem recommendations are the way to go instead of the cheap replacements.

It sounds like you need to turn the engine over a little to get the rod up further.

Yep. You're on the lobe that pushes the rod down. Bump engine so the cam turns and the rod will go higher.

mine was fuel starved from the backflow valve in the fram filter coming out.

Yes, it's a stock carb. We'll try bumping the engine again.

Make sure the rod is being pushed down far enough. Could be the lobe on the cam is worn and not stroking the lever on the pump far enough to pump fuel.
